Looking east along the sand towards Boscombe, the sun just up over the surf. In winter it rises over the sea; by midsummer it comes up behind the town, so the beach gets its light first.

Where the sun actually rises and sets here

Bournemouth’s beach faces south, which is why it gets both ends of the day. In winter the sun rises over the sea to the south-east and sets over the sea to the south-west — over the Purbeck hills, which is when the pier and groyne silhouettes are at their best. By midsummer both ends have swung inland: the sun comes up behind the town to the north-east and drops behind the West Cliff to the north-west, so the classic over-the-water sunset belongs to autumn, winter and spring. Golden hour — roughly the hour after sunrise and before sunset — is when the cliff face goes copper and the wet sand doubles everything.

Quiet practical notes: the beach is at its widest for walking an hour or two either side of low water; the zig-zag paths are unlit, so use the lit chine roads after dark; and in high summer sunrise is before 5am — check the computed times above before you set an alarm.
