How to get CCTV from a detached garage to the house

/01 — THE SHORT ANSWER

The four ways to get garage cameras back to the house

To get CCTV from a detached garage to the house, you connect the garage cameras to your home network so the recorder, your phone or a PC indoors can see them. The catch is almost always the same: the garage has power but no network cable reaching it, and ordinary Wi-Fi will not stretch reliably across the garden and through two sets of external walls.

There are four dependable ways to bridge that gap, in rough order of reliability:

  • A buried armoured ethernet cable — the gold standard: one rugged cable carries both the picture and the camera power.
  • A point-to-point wireless bridge — two small dishes that behave like an invisible ethernet cable across the garden. This is our specialism.
  • Powerline adapters — network sent over the mains wiring, which works only in the right circumstances (more on that below).
  • Standalone 4G or solar cameras — they skip your network entirely and stream over mobile data, with their own trade-offs.

Which one is right depends on the distance, whether you can dig, and whether there is a clear line of sight from the house to the garage. We help homeowners across Dorset weigh up the options and fit the right one.

/02 — THE WIRED WAY

Buried armoured ethernet: the most reliable link

If you can get a cable from the house to the garage, a wired ethernet link is the most reliable option by a distance — nothing to drop out, and nothing affected by weather or interference. For an outdoor run you want external-grade or steel-wire-armoured (SWA) cable rated for direct burial, not the flat white cable sold for indoors, which perishes in sunlight and damp.

One neat advantage: a single ethernet run carries both the camera’s picture and its power over Power over Ethernet (PoE), so you do not need a separate plug out at each camera. The one limit to remember is distance — a PoE run is good for about 100 metres from the switch to the camera, which comfortably covers most gardens.

In practice we run the armoured cable from a small PoE switch or your recorder in the house, out through the wall, along or under the garden (buried deep enough to stay clear of a spade and kept away from mains cables), and into the garage. If you also want general internet out there, the same cable can feed a link between the two buildings for Wi-Fi and computers too.

/03 — OUR SPECIALISM

Point-to-point wireless bridge: no trench needed

When digging a trench is not practical — a driveway in the way, a long run, or a garage you rent — a point-to-point wireless bridge is usually the answer, and it is the job we are best known for. Two small weatherproof units, one on the house and one on the garage, form a private, dedicated wireless link that behaves like an invisible ethernet cable. It is far steadier than a Wi-Fi extender because the two units only ever talk to each other.

The one requirement is a reasonably clear line of sight between the house and the garage — a bridge does not like a big tree or a wall in the middle. Each end needs mains power, and at the garage a small PoE switch then powers your cameras. Once the link is up, the garage cameras appear on your home network exactly as if they were wired in.

We have been building these links for years — back in 2015 we installed a point-to-point wireless link right across the River Avon for the Environment Agency to carry a fish-counter’s data. A garden is a good deal easier. It is the same approach we use for rural and farm Wi-Fi and outbuildings like granny annexes.

/04 — THE CHEAPER OPTIONS

Powerline adapters and Wi-Fi extenders: where they fall short

Powerline adapters send your network signal through the existing mains wiring: you plug one in by the router and one in the garage. When they work they are tidy and cheap — but with a detached garage they often do not. The signal has to travel over the same electrical circuit, and many detached garages are fed from their own consumer unit or a long armoured supply that the data struggles to cross. Electrical noise from tools and chargers can knock it about too. They are worth a try for a budget setup, but we would not rely on them for cameras you need running around the clock.

Wi-Fi extenders and mesh points are the other tempting shortcut. The trouble is that ordinary Wi-Fi was never meant to punch through two external walls and across a garden; you tend to get a weak, dropping signal that a continuous camera stream quickly overwhelms. An outdoor mesh unit with line of sight can sometimes help, but for a garage a proper bridge is almost always steadier.

/05 — NO CABLE, NO NETWORK

Solar and 4G cameras: skipping your network altogether

If the garage has no power and no realistic way to run a link, a standalone battery camera with a solar panel and a 4G SIM is worth considering. It runs on its own battery, tops up from the sun, and sends footage over mobile data to an app rather than to your home recorder — so it needs no cable at all.

The honest trade-offs matter, though. It only works where there is a decent mobile signal at the garage; the SIM needs a data plan (typical everyday use is around a couple of gigabytes a month, and a lot more if you record in HD continuously); the solar top-up drops off in a dark British winter, so most of these cameras record on motion rather than non-stop to save battery; and the footage lives in the camera maker’s own app or cloud, separate from any other cameras you own. For one camera watching a remote garage door they are excellent. For a joined-up system, a wired or bridged link back to the house is the better foundation.

Do I have to dig up the garden to get CCTV to the garage?

No. Digging in an armoured ethernet cable gives the most reliable link, but it is not the only way. If a trench is not practical, a point-to-point wireless bridge sends the signal across the garden with no cable in the ground at all — you just need a reasonably clear line of sight between the house and the garage. We will look at both and recommend whichever suits your layout.

How far can a wireless bridge reach?

Comfortably further than a typical garden. A small point-to-point bridge easily covers the distance from a house to a detached garage, and the same kind of kit spans much larger properties — we have run a link right across the River Avon. The real limiting factor is not distance but line of sight: a big tree, an outbuilding or a wall between the two ends will weaken the signal.

Will powerline adapters work to my detached garage?

Sometimes, but often not. Powerline adapters carry the network over your mains wiring, which only works well if the garage sits on the same electrical circuit as the house. Many detached garages are fed from a separate consumer unit or a long armoured supply the data cannot cross, so the link drops or never connects. They are fine to try on a budget, but we would not trust them for cameras running around the clock.

Can I just use a Wi-Fi extender instead?

You can try, but ordinary Wi-Fi rarely holds up across a garden and through external walls, and a continuous camera stream soon overwhelms a weak signal. An extender might give you a flaky picture that freezes; a proper wireless bridge stays steady because the two units only talk to each other. For a camera you actually rely on, the bridge is the better choice.

Will a 4G solar camera work at my garage?

Only where there is a decent mobile signal at the garage — no signal, no footage. They also need a data SIM (everyday use is around a couple of gigabytes a month, more for constant HD), and the solar charging tails off in a dark winter, so most record on motion rather than non-stop. For a single remote camera they are great; for a joined-up system a wired or bridged link is more dependable.

Do the cameras still need power out at the garage?

Usually just one supply. With a wired or bridged link we put a small PoE switch in the garage, and that single switch both connects and powers your cameras down short cables — so you do not need a plug at every camera, only mains for the switch and the bridge. Battery-and-solar cameras are the exception: they carry their own power and need none from you.

Can you just come and set the whole thing up for me?
