// SEE THE FAMILY

Confident video calling

Seeing the family on screen is one of the loveliest things technology does — and it’s easier than it looks. Here’s a gentle guide to making video calls with confidence, on whatever device you have.

  • ● For beginners
  • ● Any device
  • ● No jargon

// WHICH APP?

The easiest is the one they use

Don’t overthink it — the best app is simply the one your family already use, so ask them first.

WhatsApp

Very popular with families, free over Wi-Fi, and simple once it’s set up. Great on a phone or tablet.

Zoom

Easy for group calls and chatting to several people at once. Works on phones, tablets and computers.

Microsoft Teams

Common for work and clubs — we set this up and support it as part of Microsoft 365.

FaceTime

Lovely and simple between Apple devices. (Note: we support Windows and Android, not Apple remotely.)

Making a call, step by step

Every app is a little different, but they all follow the same friendly pattern:

  • Open the app and find the person’s name in your contacts or chats.
  • Tap the little video-camera icon to start the call.
  • Allow the app to use your camera and microphone if it asks (that’s normal and safe).
  • To answer a call, tap the green button; to finish, tap the red one.

Simple tips for a lovely call

  • Sit with a window or light in front of you, not behind, so they can see your face.
  • Prop the phone or tablet up so you don’t have to hold it — a stand or a stack of books works.
  • Use Wi-Fi where you can, for a clearer picture and no data worries.
  • If the sound’s tricky, headphones or earbuds often make a big difference.

Worried about getting it wrong? You won’t break anything by trying — and our gentle guide may help. We’re always happy to set it up and do a friendly practice call with you.

// GOOD QUESTIONS

Frequently asked

Which video-calling app should I use?

The one your family already use, so ask them first. WhatsApp and Zoom are both popular and beginner-friendly, and work on phones, tablets and computers.

Is video calling free?

The apps are free to use over Wi-Fi or your home internet. On mobile data they use your allowance, so Wi-Fi is best where you can.

Do I need a special camera?

No — phones, tablets and most laptops have a camera and microphone built in. For an older desktop, a simple plug-in webcam does the job, and we can help you choose one.

Can you help me set it up and practise?

Of course — we’ll set up the app, add your family’s contacts and do a relaxed practice call with you, at your pace. Get in touch.

Want a hand getting started?

We’ll set up video calling and do a friendly practice run with you — patiently, and never rushed.
