Why the Caps Lock light blinks when a Dell won’t start

When a Dell can’t complete its power-on self-test (POST), it can’t show anything on screen — so instead it uses the keyboard lock lights (or, on newer models, the power-button light) to flash a diagnostic code. A blinking Caps Lock light with a black or blank display means the machine is trying to tell you which part failed its start-up check.

• Most common cause: memory (RAM). On Dell, a flashing Caps Lock pattern most commonly points to a memory problem — a stick that has worked loose in its slot, a failed module, or a faulty memory socket.
• Sometimes the CPU or motherboard. If the code stays exactly the same no matter what you try, the fault can sit deeper — in the CPU’s memory controller or the mainboard itself.
