Inspiron 15 3000 & Windows 11: check the processor, not the model number
Dell’s Inspiron 15 3000 has been the UK’s workhorse budget laptop for over a decade — which is exactly why the Windows 11 question is so confusing. Some models upgrade happily. Some never will, whatever settings you change. And because Dell has reused model numbers, two completely different laptops both answer to “Inspiron 15 3520”. Here’s the 30-second check that settles it for your machine, a model-by-model table for the whole family, and your honest options either way — from a family-run Dorset firm that’s sold and supported Dell since 2001 (independent specialists, not authorised or endorsed by Dell). Why it’s confusing
Two different Inspiron 15 3520s exist — so the name on the lid can’t answer this
Dell has reused Inspiron model numbers over the years, and the 3520 is the clearest example. There is a 2012 Inspiron 15 3520, built on 2nd- and 3rd-generation Intel processors — a machine that was never eligible for Windows 11 and never will be. And there is a January 2022 Inspiron 15 3520, built on 11th- and 12th-generation processors — a machine that runs Windows 11 perfectly well and is still sold with it today.
Same name on the lid. Opposite answers. This is why the “is my Inspiron compatible?” threads on Dell’s own community forum go round in circles, and why we’re not going to start with a list of model numbers. We’ll start with the one thing that actually decides it: the processor inside your machine.
Households genuinely span both eras — we regularly see one Inspiron sail through the upgrade while its near-identical sibling can’t. Neither owner did anything wrong; they just bought the same-looking laptop a few years apart.
The 30-second check

1. Read the processor line. Press Win+R, type msinfo32 and press Enter (or open Settings > System > About). Find the “Processor” line and look at the number after the dash:
- 8000 or higher passes Microsoft’s processor floor — an i5-8250U, i5-1035G1 or i5-1235U all qualify.
- 7000 or lower fails — an i5-7200U or i3-6006U doesn’t qualify, and no setting anywhere changes that.

2. Check TPM. Press Win+R, type tpm.msc and press Enter. “Specification Version: 2.0” means that box is ticked. “Compatible TPM cannot be found” on a Dell usually does not mean it’s missing — it means Intel PTT, Dell’s built-in firmware TPM, is switched off. Tap F2 at the Dell logo to enter the BIOS, go to Security > PTT Security and enable it. Dell’s guidance (knowledge-base article 000189676) lists models like the 3567 as PTT systems — they show no separate “TPM” menu in the BIOS, which catches a lot of people out.
3. Get the official verdicts. Microsoft’s free PC Health Check app gives the final yes/no for your exact configuration. You can also put your Service Tag into dell.com/support and cross-check Dell’s Windows 11 tested list (knowledge-base article 000187485) to see whether Dell tested your model and keeps its drivers updated for Windows 11.

A decade of Inspiron 15 3000s: which ones qualify
With the processor rule in mind, here’s how the family shakes out. Dell’s tested list is the “officially supported” column; the processor check above is what Microsoft’s installer actually enforces.

The TPM myth
“But mine has TPM 2.0” — why the processor is the real blocker
The Inspiron 15 3567 is the perfect example of why this page leads with the processor. It does have firmware TPM 2.0 built in via Intel PTT — switch PTT on in the BIOS and tpm.msc happily reports version 2.0. Plenty of owners do exactly that and reasonably conclude their laptop is ready.
It isn’t. The 3567’s i5-7200U is a 7th-generation chip, one generation short of Microsoft’s floor, so PC Health Check still says no — and Dell has been clear on its community forum that the model won’t be added to the tested list or receive Windows 11 driver updates. In short:
- A TPM error is usually fixable — two minutes in the BIOS enabling PTT.
- A processor fail is not — there’s no chip-swap escape route on these laptops.

If yours fails the check
An ineligible Inspiron isn’t suddenly scrap: three honest options
First, the reassurance. Windows 10 support ended on 14 October 2025, but your laptop did not become unsafe overnight. Microsoft’s consumer Extended Security Updates originally ran to October 2026, and free consumer coverage has since been extended to 12 October 2027 — so an enrolled Inspiron still receives security updates today. Option 1: keep it on Windows 10 with ESU. Perfectly sensible for a machine that’s doing its job. Enrol, keep updating, and revisit the decision before October 2027.
Option 2: a small upgrade to make its ESU years pleasant. Most of these shipped with 4–8GB of memory and a 5400rpm mechanical hard drive — the slowness you feel is usually the drive, not the laptop being “done”. The 3567, for instance, takes a 2.5-inch SATA SSD (it has no M.2 slot) and has two DDR4-2133 memory slots, officially up to 16GB. Option 3: replace it well. And one thing said honestly: registry tweaks that force Windows 11 onto ineligible hardware do exist — but Microsoft doesn’t guarantee updates on unsupported installs, including security updates, so we don’t recommend them for a machine you rely on.

Eligible? Here’s how to upgrade without drama
For a 3580-era or newer Inspiron that passes PC Health Check, the upgrade itself is free from Microsoft — and usually smooth if you prepare:
- Back up first. Photos and documents safely copied before any major operating-system change — no exceptions.
- Enable PTT if a missing TPM was the only red flag, then re-run PC Health Check.
- Update Windows 10 fully and fetch Dell’s latest drivers for your Service Tag before you start — most post-upgrade grumbles trace back to old drivers.
- Give it time. On a machine still running its original hard drive, the upgrade can take hours — another argument for fitting an SSD at the same time.

Can a Dell Inspiron 15 3000 run Windows 11?
It depends entirely on which year yours is from. Models from 2019 onwards (3580, 3581, 3582, 3583, 3584, 3590, 3593, then 3501, 3502, 3505 and newer) are on Dell’s Windows 11 tested list. Models from 2012–2017 (3520, 3521, 3542, 3543, 3552, 3558, 3559, 3565, 3567) carry 2nd–7th-generation processors and can’t officially upgrade. Check the processor, not the model name — Dell reused numbers like “3520” across both eras.
How do I check if my Inspiron 15 can upgrade to Windows 11?
Press Win+R, type msinfo32, and read the Processor line: a number after the dash of 8000 or higher passes Microsoft’s floor; 7000 or lower fails. My Inspiron says “compatible TPM cannot be found” — is the TPM missing?
Usually not. On these Dells the TPM is built into the processor firmware as Intel PTT, and it simply ships switched off on some machines. Tap F2 at the Dell logo, go to Security > PTT Security in the BIOS and enable it — Dell’s knowledge-base article 000189676 covers it. PTT machines show no separate “TPM” menu, which is what confuses people.
Can the Inspiron 15 3567 upgrade to Windows 11?
No — and it’s a frustrating one, because the 3567 does have firmware TPM 2.0 via Intel PTT. Its i5-7200U is a 7th-generation processor, one generation short of Microsoft’s requirement, and Dell has said it won’t be added to the tested list. The honest options are Windows 10 ESU, an SSD and memory refresh for light use, or replacement.
Which Inspiron 15 3520 do I have — the old one or the new one?
Check the processor with msinfo32. A 2nd- or 3rd-generation Intel chip means the 2012 machine, which can’t run Windows 11. An 11th- or 12th-generation chip (such as an i5-1235U) means the January 2022 machine, which runs Windows 11 happily. The lid looks the same either way — only the processor line tells the truth.
Is my Inspiron unsafe now Windows 10 support has ended?
Not instantly, no. Windows 10 support ended on 14 October 2025, but Microsoft’s free consumer Extended Security Updates coverage has been extended to 12 October 2027 — so an enrolled machine still receives security updates today. Can I force Windows 11 onto an ineligible Inspiron with a registry bypass?
The bypasses exist and they do install Windows 11 — we’ll be straight about that. But Microsoft doesn’t guarantee updates on unsupported installs, including security updates, so you can end up worse off than staying on Windows 10 with ESU. We don’t recommend them for any machine you rely on.
Is it worth putting an SSD in an old Inspiron 15 instead?
For light everyday use during the ESU years, genuinely yes. These laptops mostly shipped with 5400rpm hard drives and 4–8GB of memory, so an SSD and a memory top-up (the 3567 takes a 2.5-inch SATA SSD — no M.2 slot — and officially up to 16GB) transforms how one feels.
