Dell Inspiron desktops and Windows 11 — which ones can upgrade?

The straight answer, model by model

Dell sold the Inspiron small tower for over a decade, and the model numbers all look alike — but Windows 11 draws a hard line through the middle of the family. Microsoft’s processor floor starts at Intel’s 8th generation, and Dell’s own tested-models list (Dell knowledge base article 000187485) confirms which desktops made the cut.

The slimline Inspiron 3470 and 3471 desktops are on Dell’s tested list too. One caution before you act on any table, though: Dell configured these towers with different processors over their production runs, so the sticker on the case is a clue, not a verdict. The check below tells you about your machine, and it takes half a minute.

// THE HARD TRUTH

Why there’s no upgrade path for the 3650 and 3668

With plenty of older desktops there’s a clever hardware answer — our OptiPlex 9020 guide walks through exactly that kind of thinking. We’d love to tell you the same story here, but honesty comes first: for the Inspiron 3650 and 3668 there is no supported hardware path to Windows 11 at all.

The reason is the motherboard, not just the chip that happens to be in it. The 3668 is built on Intel’s H110 chipset, which only accepts 6th and 7th-generation processors — owners on Dell’s own community forum confirm it “only takes 6th or 7th gen”, and the hardware databases agree. Windows 11’s floor starts at the 8th generation, so even the best processor the board can physically take still fails the check. The 3650 is a generation older again, from the DDR3L era, and the same logic applies. Neither model appears on Dell’s tested list, and Dell isn’t updating drivers for them.

Could you swap the motherboard, processor and memory together? Technically that’s building a different computer inside an old case — and by the time it’s done, it costs more than a good refurbished business desktop that already runs Windows 11. We won’t sell you that job, and we’d be wary of anyone who would. As independent Dell specialists we make nothing from telling you this — which is rather the point.

// IF YOURS FAILS

Three honest options for a 3650 or 3668

First, the reassurance: an ineligible desktop is not instantly unsafe. Windows 10 reached end of support on 14 October 2025, but Microsoft’s consumer Extended Security Updates picked up where it left off — and that programme ends on 12 October 2027, so it buys time rather than a future. That gives you time to decide calmly. Your three real options:

• Keep it on Windows 10 with ESU. Enrol, keep receiving security updates, and revisit the decision nearer 2027. Our ESU-or-upgrade guide walks through the whole decision, including how to enrol.
• Keep it useful for lighter duties. A machine that can’t run Windows 11 can still be a perfectly good Linux desktop, an offline workhorse for an older program, or a spare — especially with the cheap speed boost described below.
• Replace it like for like. A refurbished business-grade Dell OptiPlex from £545 — with a brand-new 1TB Samsung 990 PRO SSD, Windows 11, full setup and your data moved across, all included — is the natural successor to an Inspiron tower, and usually a sturdier machine than the one it replaces.

One thing we don’t recommend: the registry workarounds that force Windows 11 onto unsupported hardware. They exist, but Microsoft doesn’t guarantee updates on unsupported installs — the wrong trade for a computer you rely on.
