Is the Dell Latitude 5300 still worth buying in 2026?

For the money, yes — with one condition: buy one that already has an SSD and a decent battery. The Latitude 5300 launched around 2019 as a compact 13.3-inch business ultraportable in Dell’s 5000 series (the mainstream, sensible middle tier — not the budget 3000 line, not the premium 7000 line). That means a proper business-class build, a matte anti-glare screen option and the kind of durability testing Dell’s business range is known for, rather than a flimsy consumer shell.

Under the lid it’s an 8th-generation Intel Core chip (typically an i5, with i3 and i7 versions out there). That’s comfortably fast enough in 2026 for the things most people actually do — web, email, Microsoft 365, video calls, streaming and light photo work. Where it shows its age: heavy multitasking with dozens of browser tabs, big spreadsheets, or video editing. It’s an everyday laptop, not a workstation. If that matches how you work, it’s hard to beat on price.

What to check on a used Latitude 5300

A refurbished machine is only as good as the checks behind it. If you’re buying privately or from an online marketplace, look at these before you hand over money:

• Battery health — the single biggest thing that ages on a 2019 laptop. Ask for the current battery wear/health figure; a tired cell means an hour of real use. Batteries are replaceable, but factor in the cost.
• The drive — make sure it’s an SSD, not an old hard drive, and that it’s a sensible size (256 GB+). The 5300 uses a standard M.2 stick, so an upgrade is straightforward if needed.
• Ports and hinges — test the USB-C, USB-A, HDMI and headphone sockets, and open/close the lid a few times to feel for a loose or stiff hinge.
• Screen — there were higher- and lower-resolution panels; the sharper Full-HD matte screen is the nicer one to live with. Check for cracks, dead pixels and heavy backlight bleed.
• Windows & licence — confirm it’s a clean, activated, licensed copy of Windows — not a half-set-up machine full of the last owner’s files.

How long will a 5300 keep going — and what about Windows 11?

These are properly built business laptops, so a well-kept 5300 with an SSD should keep serving nicely for years of everyday use. The good news on Windows 11 is that the 5300 makes the cut: 8th-generation Intel Core is the oldest processor generation on Microsoft’s official Windows 11 support list, and the 5300 has the TPM 2.0 security chip Windows 11 needs — Dell even publishes a dedicated Windows 11 driver pack for it. Since Windows 10 stopped getting free support in October 2025, that Windows 11 eligibility is a real plus rather than an afterthought. The honest caveat: sitting at the older end of the supported range, it won’t stay on the list forever — but it runs Windows 11 perfectly well today, and we’ll set it up properly rather than leave you guessing.

One of the best things about the 5300 is that it’s easy to keep alive: the RAM and M.2 SSD are user-serviceable, and the battery can be swapped.
