Still running after fifteen years? That’s exactly the point

The OptiPlex 990 launched in 2011 as the flagship of Dell’s business desktop range — 2nd-generation “Sandy Bridge” Intel Core i3, i5 and i7 processors, built for corporate fleets and sold in mini tower, desktop, small form factor and ultra small form factor cases. These machines were specified to survive years of office life, and plenty have survived a good deal more than that.

If yours still boots every morning, that isn’t luck. It’s business-grade build quality — and it’s precisely why we sell refurbished business-grade Dell rather than new budget machines. A consumer desktop from 2011 would almost certainly be in landfill by now. Your 990 is quietly making our case for us.

So none of what follows is a criticism of the machine. It’s simply what fifteen years does to any computer — and one deadline that’s now behind us.

The honest bit

Three real reasons it’s time to move on

1. The hard drive is living on borrowed time. Most 990s still have their original mechanical hard drive — a spinning metal platter that’s been running for well over a decade. Mechanical drives don’t last forever, and when one fails it often takes your photos, documents and accounts with it. If yours has never been replaced, the question isn’t if, it’s when.

2. The memory can’t keep up. Many 990s shipped with 4GB of DDR3 — generous in 2011, but a modern web browser with a handful of tabs can swallow that on its own. That’s the grinding slowness you’ve probably noticed.

3. The big one: no Windows 11 — and Windows 10 is finished. Windows 11 officially requires an 8th-generation Intel processor or newer, plus TPM 2.0. The 990’s 2nd-generation chips are six generations short, and it carries the older TPM 1.2. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on 14 October 2025, so a 990 that goes online today no longer receives security updates — and every month that passes, the risk of using it for email, banking or shopping grows.

The bypass question

Can you force Windows 11 onto an OptiPlex 990? Yes — and we’d honestly advise against it

You may have seen registry tweaks and installer tricks that bypass the TPM and processor checks, and we’ll be straight with you: they do exist and they do work, in the sense that Windows 11 will install.

Here’s why we don’t recommend them:

  • Updates aren’t guaranteed. Microsoft states that unsupported installs may not receive updates — including security updates. You could end up exactly where you started: online without protection.
  • The hardware is still the hardware. A bypass doesn’t add memory, doesn’t make a 2011 processor faster, and doesn’t make a decade-old hard drive safer. Windows 11 on a 990 is the same struggling machine with a newer wallpaper.
  • You inherit the risk. If a future update refuses to install or breaks the machine, there’s no supported route out.
