// THREE WAYS TO RUN IT

Home, business desk & off-grid

Desktops are simple to power — but a couple of choices make them safer, tidier and (if you must) even off-grid-able.

SetupHowWhy
At homeKettle lead through a surge-protected stripCheap insurance for the whole setup
Business deskA small UPS (battery backup) between the wall and the PCRides through power cuts — no lost work or corrupted files
Off-gridA quality pure-sine inverter from a 12V leisure batteryDesktops need mains — a clean pure-sine supply keeps them happy

Care & upgrades

  • Let it breathe

Vents need a few centimetres of clear space — not against the wall, not under the desk drift. Heat is what ages electronics.

  • Dust it yearly

A can of compressed air through the vents (machine OFF) once a year keeps fans quiet and temperatures down. We do it as part of every service.

  • Room to grow

OptiPlex cases open tool-free and take more memory and storage easily — a £40 RAM stick years from now beats a new PC. That’s an upgrade we can do for you.

  • Sleep vs shutdown

Day to day, sleep is fine and instant. A proper restart once a week clears the cobwebs — and lets Windows updates actually finish.

// 60-SECOND FIXES

When something misbehaves

  • Screen says ‘no signal’

Check the monitor’s INPUT button matches the port you used (DP vs HDMI), and both cable ends are firm. Two monitors, one working? Win+P.

  • Won’t turn on at all

Kettle lead firmly in at BOTH ends, socket switched on, then hold the power button 15 seconds and try again. Flashing amber? Count the blinks and call us — it’s a code.

  • No sound

Speaker icon in Windows → check the right output is selected — monitors pretend to be speakers. Headset? Use the front jack.

  • USB device not working

Try it in a REAR port — those connect straight to the board. If it works there, the front panel needs a look.

  • Running slow

Gradual slowdown is software clutter or an ageing drive — a tune-up or SSD/RAM upgrade transforms it. Benchmark it free and see.

  • Anything else

That’s literally us. Remote support, usually within minutes — how it works.

// GOOD QUESTIONS

Frequently asked

Can the OptiPlex run two monitors?

Yes — most have two DisplayPorts on the back, so dual screens work out of the box. Monitor only has HDMI? A simple DisplayPort-to-HDMI cable sorts it. Plug both in, press Win+P, choose Extend, then drag the screens into the right order in Settings → Display.

Can I upgrade it later?

That’s the OptiPlex party trick: the case opens without tools and takes more memory and storage easily. Machines we supply already have a brand-new SSD; adding RAM or a second drive later is a quick job we can do for you.

Can I run a desktop in my campervan or off-grid?

You can — small-form-factor models need a pure sine wave inverter and drink noticeably more than a laptop, while the tiny OptiPlex Micro can run from 12V via a DC–DC adapter. Our honest steer: off-grid is laptop territory — see the Latitude 3520 guide for the efficient 12V USB-C setup.

What’s the power lead called if I lose it?

A “kettle lead” (properly: an IEC C13). Any office has a drawer full; any replacement fits. Push it in firmly — a half-seated one is a classic cause of ‘dead’ computers.

The power light is flashing amber — what does it mean?

That’s the machine blinking a diagnostic code at you. Count the pattern (e.g. two blinks, pause, three blinks) and tell us — it identifies the fault before we’ve even opened the case.
