How to Free Up Storage Space on a Full Computer

A ‘disk full’ warning — or that nagging OneDrive message — is one of the most common headaches we sort. Here is how to reclaim space safely, using only the tools already built into Windows.

You do not need a third-party ‘cleaner’ app (we would steer you away from those). Everything here uses Windows’ own tools. Work down the list and stop when you have enough room.

See what is using the space

Go to Settings > System > Storage to see exactly what is filling your drive. Then empty the Recycle Bin and your Downloads folder — both quietly hoard gigabytes. Turn on Storage Sense to clear temporary files automatically from now on, and run Disk Cleanup for a one-off sweep.

What is safe to delete — and what to leave

Temporary files, the Recycle Bin and old downloads are safe to clear. Leave anything in Windows, Program Files or folders you do not recognise well alone. The biggest space-savers are usually photos and videos — move them to OneDrive or an external drive (see how to back up your photos), and uninstall apps you no longer use.

// GOOD QUESTIONS

Frequently asked

Is it safe to delete temporary files?

Yes — temporary files, the Recycle Bin and old downloads are safe to clear. Stick to Windows’ own Storage and Disk Cleanup tools and leave system folders alone.

What is OneDrive asking me to do?

OneDrive can move files to the cloud to save space on your PC. It is usually helpful, but it is worth understanding — see OneDrive explained.

My disk is still full after a cleanup — what now?

Large photo, video or backup files are often the culprit. Move them to OneDrive or an external drive, or get in touch and we will take a look.
