How to Transfer Files to a New Computer

Got a new computer? The first worry is always ‘how do I get everything across?’ Here is a calm, step-by-step guide to moving your files from the old PC to the new one.

Good news: your documents, photos and favourites are easy to move. The one thing that does not copy across is your programs — those need reinstalling — but your files come with you.

The easiest way: the cloud

If you use OneDrive, simply sign in on both computers and your files appear on the new one automatically. No cables, no fuss. Move your browser bookmarks and saved passwords too (a password manager makes this effortless across devices).

No cloud? Use a drive

Copy your documents, photos and other files onto an external drive or USB stick, then copy them onto the new PC. Reinstall your programs from their apps or websites, set up your email, and — crucially — check everything has arrived safely before you wipe and recycle the old computer. Prefer to hand it over? We move everything across as part of new computer setup.

// GOOD QUESTIONS

Frequently asked

Will my programs transfer too?

No — programs need reinstalling on the new computer (your files do come across). It is a good chance for a clean start with only the apps you actually use.

How do I move my emails?

If you use Microsoft 365 or webmail, your email simply appears when you sign in on the new PC. For older setups we can move it across for you — see email support.

What about my saved passwords?

Use a password manager so they sync automatically, or export and import your browser passwords. We can help you do this safely.
