How to safely wipe & recycle an old computer

    Sign out and deauthorise

    Sign out of your Microsoft account, turn off Find My / iCloud, and sign out of browsers and any licensed software, so the device isn’t tied to you.

    Reset Windows and remove your data

    Settings → System → Recovery → Reset this PC → Remove everything, and choose the option to clean the drive. This does far more than simply deleting files.

    Know why ‘delete’ isn’t enough

    Dragging files to the bin doesn’t truly remove them — they can often be recovered. A proper reset or secure erase is what makes data unrecoverable.

    Decide what to do with the drive

    On modern computers a built-in reset is enough for most people. For maximum peace of mind — or a faulty machine that won’t reset — the drive can be removed and securely erased or destroyed.

Recycle or reuse it responsibly

Old electricals should never go in the bin — they contain materials worth recovering, and it’s covered by UK WEEE rules. Good options:

  • Your local recycling centre — find one via Recycle Now.
  • Retailer take-back schemes when you buy a replacement (a WEEE duty for many sellers).
  • Manufacturer recycling, such as Dell’s recycling programme.
  • Donate working machines to a reuse charity so someone else benefits.

Frequently asked

Is ‘Reset this PC’ enough to wipe my data?

For most people, yes — choosing ‘Remove everything’ and cleaning the drive makes your data very difficult to recover. For highly sensitive data, a dedicated secure erase or physically destroying the drive gives complete certainty.

Does it matter if it’s an SSD or a hard drive?

A little. On modern SSDs the built-in reset is effective. On older spinning hard drives, a secure-erase tool — or removing the drive — gives extra assurance. We can advise or do it for you.

Can I just take the hard drive out?

Yes — keeping or destroying the drive is the surest way to protect your data, and you can still recycle the rest of the machine. We’re happy to remove it for you.

Where can I recycle a computer near me?

Use the Recycle Now locator for your nearest centre, or ask the retailer you’re buying a replacement from about take-back.
