Buying refurbished is safe — as long as you buy from the right place. The risk is not refurbishment itself; it is who you buy from. Here is how to stay safe.
The real risks (and they are avoidable)
The problems people run into nearly always come from untrustworthy sellers, not from refurbished machines as such: an untested computer with a hidden fault, a worn-out battery, unlicensed Windows, a warranty already void — or the previous owner’s data left on the drive. A suspiciously cheap machine on a marketplace, from a seller who vanishes after payment, is where things go wrong.
How to buy one safely
Buy from a reputable, established seller you can actually contact. Look for machines that are fully tested, securely wiped with a clean copy of Windows, clearly graded for condition, and covered by a real warranty. Buying from a UK business also gives you Consumer Rights Act protection — including a 30-day right to reject if something is faulty — which you simply do not get buying privately.
What about my data — and my old machine?
A proper refurbisher securely erases all previous data before resale. And when you upgrade, we can move your files across to your new Dell, then securely wipe and responsibly recycle your old machine, with a certificate. See our secure IT disposal service.
