What is Malware?

"Malware" is just a short way of saying "malicious software" - any program written to do something harmful to your computer or phone. It's the umbrella word that covers viruses, spyware, ransomware and the like, in the same way "vehicle" covers cars, vans and lorries.

Think of your Windows PC or Android phone as your home. Most software is an invited guest. Malware is the uninvited visitor who slips in through an unlocked window - usually because you clicked a dodgy link, opened the wrong email attachment, or installed a "free" program that wasn't what it claimed. Once inside, it might rummage through your drawers (steal passwords), make a mess (delete files), or quietly watch what you do.

Why it matters

Malware isn't just a nuisance - it can empty a bank account, lock you out of your own photos and documents, or steal the customer details a small business is legally responsible for protecting. For a sole trader or family, the real cost is often the stress, the lost work, and the hours spent putting things right. Criminals don't only target big companies; everyday home users and small Dorset businesses are easy, profitable targets precisely because they often have less protection in place.

What to do

• Keep Windows and Android updated. Those update prompts patch the very holes malware sneaks through - don't keep clicking "remind me later".
• Use reputable security software and let it run its scans. Windows has Microsoft Defender built in; a trusted extra layer can help too.
• Think before you click. Be wary of unexpected attachments, "you've won" pop-ups, and links in texts or emails - even ones that look like they're from a company you know.
• Only install apps from trusted places - the official Google Play Store on Android, and known sources on Windows.
• Back up your important files so that if the worst happens, you haven't lost your photos and paperwork.
• If something feels wrong - the PC is suddenly slow, odd pop-ups appear, or files won't open - stop and ask for help rather than carrying on.
