What is Modem?

A modem is the box that connects your home or office to the internet. Think of it as a translator standing at your front door: the internet arrives from outside down a phone line, cable, or fibre, but it speaks a language your computers and phones can't understand. The modem translates that incoming signal into something your devices can use - and translates your requests back the other way when you send an email or load a web page.

These days the modem is often built into the same unit as your router (the box your broadband company sends you usually does both jobs at once). So when people point at "the internet box" with the flashing lights, they're often looking at a combined modem and router in one.

Why it matters

The modem is the single doorway between you and the internet - if it stops working, nothing else connects, no matter how good your laptop or phone is. For a small business that means no email, no card payments, and no cloud files until it's back. Knowing which box is your modem (and that a quick restart often fixes a dropout) can save you a frustrating wait and an unnecessary call-out.

What to do

• Try the classic restart first. Switch the modem off at the wall, wait 30 seconds, then switch it back on. Give it a couple of minutes to fully wake up - this clears most temporary glitches.
• Give it room to breathe. Keep it out in the open, not shut in a cupboard or behind the TV, so it doesn't overheat.
• Don't bin the old one until the new one works. If you switch broadband provider, they'll usually send a new modem - keep the old one until the new connection is confirmed live.
• If the lights look wrong, note them down. A red or flashing light usually points to a line fault. Jotting down which light and what colour helps whoever you call sort it faster.
