Why mapped drives drop — and why it's usually an easy fix
A mapped network drive is just a shortcut that gives a shared folder — on a server, a NAS box, or another office PC — its own drive letter like S: or Z:, so it behaves like part of your own computer. When it "disconnects", the letter is still there but Windows has lost its live connection to the folder behind it, so you see a red X on the drive, a "reconnecting" spinner, or errors like "the network path was not found" or "an error occurred while reconnecting".
Here's the reassuring part: on small-office networks this is rarely a sign of something seriously broken. It's almost always one of a short list of well-known causes — forgotten credentials, a power-saving setting quietly switching your network card off, a Windows or SMB timeout dropping idle connections, or an unstable Wi-Fi link. Work through the fixes below in order and most drives settle down. Saved credentials and network-card power settings
1. Credentials aren't being saved. By far the most common cause. If the drive lives on a server or NAS that needs a username and password, and those aren't stored, Windows quietly drops the connection whenever the session lapses — and you're prompted to sign in again (or just get an error). The fix is to store the login in Credential Manager: open the Start menu, search Credential Manager, choose Windows Credentials, then Add a Windows credential. Enter the server or NAS name (for example \\SERVER or its IP address) with the correct username and password. When you re-map the drive, tick "Reconnect at sign-in" and, if the share needs a different login, "Connect using different credentials" so it signs in cleanly every time. In business setups it's worth doing this consistently across every PC — something we handle as standard.
2. Windows is powering down the network card. A sneaky one. By default, Windows is often allowed to switch off your network adapter to save power — and when it does, your mapped drive drops. To stop it: right-click Start, open Device Manager, expand Network adapters, right-click your adapter, choose Properties, go to the Power Management tab, and untick "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power". On laptops it's also worth setting the power plan so it doesn't aggressively sleep the network. These two fixes alone resolve the majority of the mapped-drive cases we see.

SMB session timeouts and reconnecting at logon
Idle SMB sessions time out. SMB is the protocol Windows uses to talk to shared folders. To save resources, Windows and many servers/NAS devices automatically drop a connection that's been idle for a while (an "autodisconnect"). Come back after a coffee break and the drive shows disconnected until you double-click it. On the Windows server side this behaviour is controlled by the autodisconnect setting, and on a NAS the idle-timeout can usually be raised — but these are settings best changed knowingly, because getting them wrong can cause other issues, so it's a fair point to hand to us. Another common trigger on managed networks is Group Policy drive maps set to "Recreate" instead of "Update", which drop and rebuild the drive on every refresh; switching them to "Update" clears a whole class of these disconnects.
Reconnect at logon — and persistent mapping. Make sure the drive is set to reconnect automatically. When you map it (in File Explorer, This PC → Map network drive), tick "Reconnect at sign-in". In a managed office, drives are often mapped centrally by a Group Policy or a logon script instead, so they appear reliably on every machine the same way — which is far more robust than each person mapping their own. If your drives are mapped by hand and keep drifting out of sync across the team, moving to a proper policy-based mapping is one of the tidy-ups we do when we take on an office's IT support.

Wi-Fi vs wired, and the wider network
Sometimes the drive is innocent and the network is the problem. Wi-Fi is the usual suspect. A shared drive needs a steady, always-on connection, and Wi-Fi — especially at the edge of a busy office, on a crowded channel, or roaming between access points — drops packets that a mapped drive doesn't tolerate well. If a machine that keeps disconnecting is on Wi-Fi, the single most effective fix is often to plug it into a network cable. Where wiring isn't practical, we look at access-point placement, channels and mesh coverage so the connection stays rock-solid.
Beyond that, we check the boring-but-important basics that catch offices out: a NAS or server going to sleep, a flaky switch or network cable, IP addresses changing so the drive points at the wrong place, or the server simply being overloaded at busy times. None of it is exotic — but chasing it down across several PCs eats an afternoon, which is why offices across Bournemouth and Poole simply hand it to us.
