Minecraft parental controls — why it’s an Xbox setting, and how to manage chat and multiplayer

The thing that confuses every parent: Minecraft’s parental controls aren’t in Minecraft. Mojang’s own words: “Minecraft uses Microsoft and Xbox family safety features to manage parental controls even if you do not play Minecraft on an Xbox.” So a child playing on an iPad, a phone or a PC is governed by the Xbox privacy settings on their Microsoft child account — multiplayer, chat, Realms, and Marketplace spending all live there. Here’s where, plus the in-game chat settings that do exist. Rated 4.9 on Google.

/01 — THE ONE THING TO UNDERSTAND

It’s the Xbox account, whatever they play on

Every modern Minecraft (Bedrock on phones, tablets, consoles and Windows; Java on PC) signs in with a Microsoft account, and a child Microsoft account carries Xbox privacy settings whether or not there’s an Xbox in the house. Those settings decide whether your child can join multiplayer, join a Realm or server, add friends, and who can talk to them by voice or text. Mojang: only parent accounts can modify them, and they don’t provide parental controls for Minecraft versions older than 1.16.4 or for modded versions.

So the setup is: family group first (family.microsoft.com > Create a family group > Add a family member, or the Xbox Family Settings app > Add Child), then the Xbox privacy settings, then spending. If you’ve already done our Xbox page, most of this is done.

/02 — STEP BY STEP

Multiplayer, chat, Realms, spending

Multiplayer and friends (Bedrock, on the web): xbox.com > Privacy & online safety > the child > Xbox and Windows 10 devices Online Safety tab > “You can join multiplayer games” (this one covers multiplayer, Realms and servers), “You can join cross-network play”, “You can add friends and follow others”. Sign the child out of Minecraft and close it first, then Submit. Java adds “Others can send you friend requests”.
Who can talk to them: the Privacy tab > “You can communicate outside of Xbox with voice & text” > Everyone / Friends / Block. Mojang’s note: choosing Friends limits incoming chat to players on the friends list — for most children that’s the right setting.
On an Xbox console: Privacy & online safety > Xbox privacy > View details & customise > Friends & clubs > “You can create or join clubs” = Allow (Realms need it); Communication & multiplayer > join multiplayer games and cross-network play = Allow. In the Family Settings app: Settings > Manage Minecraft under Content restrictions > Allow game play, Multiplayer, Clubs.
Marketplace spending: family.microsoft.com > child > Spending (Add Money to a controlled balance; Ask to buy / Require approval), or the app > child > Spending. Then sign out of Minecraft and restart it.
In the game itself: Java: Options > Chat Settings > Chat mode: Shown, Commands Only, or Hidden. Java 1.19.1+ also has Player Reporting in the pause menu, which can hide another player’s messages. Bedrock: Filter Profanity (Settings > General) is on by default and can’t be turned off on a child account.

An honesty note: you’ll see “trusted-only chat” mentioned on forums. Mojang doesn’t document a setting by that name, so we don’t print it as a menu — the real levers are the Xbox Friends communication setting above and Java’s Chat mode.

My child plays on an iPad. Why are you talking about Xbox?

Because Minecraft signs in with a Microsoft account, and a child Microsoft account carries Xbox privacy settings whether or not you own an Xbox. Multiplayer, chat, Realms and friends are all controlled there. It’s Mojang’s design, not ours.

My child says they can’t join their friend’s Realm.

Two settings gate it: “You can join multiplayer games” must be allowed, and on console “You can create or join clubs” must be Allow (Realms use clubs under the hood). Change them at xbox.com or on the console, then sign the child out of Minecraft and back in.

How do I stop strangers talking to my child in Minecraft?

Set “You can communicate outside of Xbox with voice & text” to Friends (or Block) in the child’s Xbox privacy settings. Mojang confirms Friends limits incoming chat to the friends list. On Java you can also set Chat mode to Commands Only or Hidden.

How do I stop Marketplace spending?

family.microsoft.com > the child > Spending > turn on Ask to buy / Require approval, and only add money to their balance deliberately. Then restart Minecraft.
