New Outlook has no Send/Receive button — here's what to do

If you've moved to the new Outlook and the Send/Receive button has vanished, don't worry — it's gone on purpose. The new Outlook syncs your mail automatically and continuously, so Microsoft removed the manual Send/Receive button classic Outlook had. When you do want to force a refresh, just press F9 or use View > Sync. And if mail genuinely isn't coming through, there are a few quick things to check below. Rated 4.9 on Google.

Answer first

There's no button because it syncs automatically

The missing Send/Receive button in the new Outlook is not a fault — it's by design. Classic Outlook needed you to press Send/Receive (or F9) to pull in new mail and push out anything sitting in your Outbox. The new Outlook is always connected and syncs in the background in real time, so a manual button is no longer needed. Your mail arrives on its own.

Want to force a sync anyway? Two ways:

  • Press F9 on your keyboard.
  • Or go to the View tab and click Sync.

That nudges Outlook to check the server straight away. If that gets your mail moving, you're done.

If mail really isn't arriving

Fixes when new mail genuinely isn't coming through

If F9 doesn't help and messages truly aren't appearing, work through these in order:

1. Try toggling offline mode off. Offline email is normally on by default and is a good thing — it keeps a local copy so Outlook works without internet. But if the local copy has got stuck, briefly turning it off forces a fresh pull from the server. Go to Settings (the gear icon, top-right) > General > Offline and turn off "Enable offline email, calendar, and people". Restart Outlook and see if mail flows, then turn it back on afterwards so you keep offline access.

2. Check the account shows Connected. Look at the bottom of the Outlook window or in Settings > Accounts > Email accounts and confirm your account says it's connected, not "disconnected", "needs attention" or asking you to sign in again. If it's asking you to sign in, do so — an expired login is a common reason mail stops.

3. Check you're actually online. Open a website in your browser to confirm your internet is working. New Outlook relies on a live connection, so a dropped Wi-Fi or a firewall block will stop sync.

4. Remove and re-add the account. If the account is stuck, go to Settings > Accounts > Email accounts, remove the affected account, then add it back with Add account. Your mail lives on the server (Microsoft 365, Outlook.com, Exchange or IMAP), so it re-downloads when you add the account again — nothing is lost.

Want a real Send/Receive button back? Use classic Outlook

If you rely on manual Send/Receive control — for example on a patchy connection where you like to trigger sync yourself — classic Outlook still has the full Send/Receive tab and button, and it's still installed on your PC.

To switch back, turn off the New Outlook toggle in the top-right corner and choose Switch back to classic Outlook. Classic Outlook is supported until at least 2029, so this is a perfectly good long-term option if the automatic sync model doesn't suit how you work. // GOOD QUESTIONS

Frequently asked

Why is there no Send/Receive button in the new Outlook?

It's by design. The new Outlook stays connected and syncs your mail automatically and continuously, so Microsoft removed the manual Send/Receive button that classic Outlook had. New mail arrives on its own without you pressing anything.

How do I force new Outlook to check for mail?

Press F9 on your keyboard, or go to the View tab and click Sync. Either one tells Outlook to check the server for new mail straight away.

New mail isn't arriving even after F9 — how do I fix it?

Briefly turn off 'Enable offline email, calendar, and people' under Settings > General > Offline and restart Outlook (then turn it back on). Check the account shows Connected (sign in again if prompted), confirm your internet is working, and if it's still stuck, remove and re-add the account. Your mail re-downloads from the server, so nothing is lost.

Does turning off offline email delete anything?

No. Offline email only controls whether a local copy is kept for use without internet, and it's normally on by default. Turning it off doesn't delete your mail — your messages live on the server — and you can switch it straight back on.

Can I get the classic Send/Receive button back?

Yes. Classic Outlook still has the full Send/Receive tab and button and is still installed. Turn off the New Outlook toggle in the top-right corner and choose 'Switch back to classic Outlook'. Classic is supported until at least 2029.
