Outlook fix - New Outlook for Windows
New Outlook won't open on Windows 11
If the new Outlook won't open on Windows 11 - you click the icon and nothing happens, no window, no error - the usual cause is a corrupt local cache, and the fix is to close Outlook fully, then rename two folders (Olk and OneAuth) under %localappdata%\Microsoft. Your email lives in the cloud, so nothing is lost. Here's exactly how, in plain English. Rated 4.9 on Google.

Why it happens
Why the new Outlook won't open (and why your email is safe)
The new Outlook for Windows keeps a set of local cache and sign-in files on your PC to make it start faster and work offline. When one of those files gets damaged - often after a Windows update, a bad shutdown, or an interrupted sync - Outlook can fail silently on launch. You double-click, the pointer spins for a second, and then nothing. No window, no error message. Microsoft acknowledged a wave of exactly this in December 2025, and the folder-rename below is the accepted fix.
The good news: in the new Outlook, your actual email, calendar and contacts live in the cloud (on Microsoft 365 or Outlook.com), not on your PC. The files that are causing the problem are only temporary local copies. That means you can safely clear them - Outlook simply rebuilds them and re-downloads your mail the next time it opens. Nothing important is deleted.
Two folders do almost all the trouble here. Olk holds the app's cache and offline data. OneAuth holds cached sign-in tokens. Renaming both forces the new Outlook to start clean, which clears the vast majority of "won't open" cases we see. This is a well-documented Microsoft workaround, not a risky hack - and because you rename rather than delete, it's fully reversible.

The fix
How to fix it - step by step
Follow these in order. Steps 1 to 4 fix most people. Steps 5 and 6 are the fallback if it still won't open.
- Close Outlook completely. Right-click the Start button, choose Task Manager, and on the Processes tab look for anything called Outlook (or olk.exe). Click it and press End task. Do this for every Outlook entry so none are left running in the background.
- Open the right folder. Press the Windows key + R, type
%localappdata%\Microsoftand press Enter. A File Explorer window opens showing lots of folders. - Rename the Olk folder. Find the folder called Olk, right-click it, choose Rename, and change it to Olk.old. (Renaming rather than deleting means you can put it back if you ever need to - though you won't.)
- Rename the OneAuth folder. In the same window, find OneAuth, right-click, Rename, and call it OneAuth.old. Now reopen the new Outlook from the Start menu. It will ask you to sign in again - go ahead (have your password or authenticator ready, as you may get a security prompt), then allow a couple of minutes for your mail to reappear as it syncs from the cloud.
- Still won't open? Reset the app. Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Outlook (new), click the three dots to the right, choose Advanced options, then click Repair first (this keeps your data). If that doesn't do it, click Reset - this clears the app's local data as if freshly installed. Your cloud email is untouched, but you'll sign in and set your accounts up again.
- Last resort - reinstall. From the same Advanced options screen choose Uninstall, then reinstall the new Outlook from the Microsoft Store (search "Outlook"). Sign back in and your account reloads from the cloud.
If you'd rather not touch Task Manager and hidden folders yourself, that's exactly the kind of thing we sort out remotely in a few minutes - see below.

// GOOD QUESTIONS
Frequently asked
Will I lose my emails if I rename the Olk and OneAuth folders?
No. In the new Outlook your email, calendar and contacts are stored in the cloud (Microsoft 365 or Outlook.com). The Olk and OneAuth folders only hold temporary local cache and sign-in files, which Outlook rebuilds automatically. You will be asked to sign in again and wait a minute or two while mail re-downloads, but nothing is permanently deleted. Because you rename the folders rather than delete them, the step is also reversible.
I click the new Outlook icon and nothing happens at all - is this the same problem?
Almost certainly, yes. "Nothing happens" with no window and no error is the classic sign of a corrupt local cache in the new Outlook, and Microsoft flagged a wave of exactly this from December 2025. Close any hidden Outlook process in Task Manager first, then follow the Olk and OneAuth rename steps above. If it still won't launch, move on to Repair, then Reset, then reinstall.
What's the difference between Repair and Reset for the new Outlook?
Repair tries to fix the app while keeping your local data and settings - always try this first. Reset clears the app's local cached data completely, returning it closer to a fresh-install state, so you'll sign in and set your accounts up again afterwards. Reset is safe for your actual email because that data is in the cloud. Use Reset only if Repair doesn't work.
Do I need to reinstall Windows or my whole Office to fix this?
No, definitely not. This is a local cache issue with the new Outlook app only. Renaming two folders, or at worst resetting or reinstalling just the Outlook app from the Microsoft Store, resolves it. There's no need to touch Windows itself or your other Office apps.
Can you fix the new Outlook not opening remotely?
Yes - this is a quick remote job for us. We connect using Splashtop SOS (you watch your screen the whole time, we phone you first, and access ends the moment we're done), clear the corrupt cache safely, and confirm your mail is syncing again. Most "Outlook won't open" calls are fixed within minutes, same day. Call 01202 775566.
Still staring at a dead Outlook icon?
We'll share your screen (you watch the whole time, we phone first), get the new Outlook opening again, and check your mail is syncing - usually within minutes. Same-day, friendly, Bournemouth-based since 1995.
