The WiFi keeps dropping out for everyone — every laptop, every phone, the printer, sometimes the card machine — and then it comes back, until it doesn't. Below we walk through them in the order we'd check them ourselves: an overworked consumer router, an exhausted address pool, channel congestion from neighbouring businesses, a failing PoE switch, and — more often than anyone expects — a broadband line that's dropping while the WiFi itself is perfectly healthy.

/02 — SUSPECT ONE
One consumer router doing a whole business's job
Most small offices are still running on the router the broadband provider posted out — a box designed for a family. It's doing the routing, the firewall, the WiFi and the job of handing every device an address (DHCP), and it was specced for a household's worth of gadgets. Ask it to serve twenty staff plus their phones, the printers, the CCTV and every visitor's handset, and it runs hot, drops wireless clients under load, and occasionally reboots itself — at which point everyone drops at once.
The address pool is the quieter version of the same problem. Every device on your network borrows an address from a fixed pool, and on many routers that pool is smaller than people assume — defaults and settings vary by model, which is exactly why we check rather than guess. When the pool fills up, new devices can't join at all, and as leases expire and churn, devices that were happily connected start behaving strangely.
The fingerprint: drops that get worse mid-morning as the office fills, devices showing "connected, no internet", and everything recovering after a router reboot — then sliding back within days. A reboot isn't a fix; it's a symptom with a schedule.
/03 — SUSPECTS TWO AND THREE
Crowded channels — and Dorset's radar quirk
WiFi is a shared radio, and in a business park or above a high street you're sharing it with every firm around you. The older 2.4 GHz band has, in practice, only three channels that don't overlap — so when your neighbours' networks pile onto the same ones, everybody's WiFi degrades together, and it's worst at exactly the hours you need it most.
The faster 5 GHz band has more room, but one quirk matters enormously around here: many of its channels are shared with radar. The rules (called DFS) require an access point that detects radar — or anything that resembles it — to leave that channel immediately. When that happens, every device on the access point drops while it finds a new home. Brief, random, whole-office cut-outs that heal themselves within a minute or two are the classic signature, and being near the Dorset coast and Bournemouth Airport puts radar events firmly on the local suspect list.

/04 — SUSPECTS FOUR AND FIVE
The failing switch, and the line drop everyone blames on WiFi
Two causes get missed constantly. The first is the PoE switch — the box that feeds power and data to ceiling-mounted access points through the network cable. When one starts failing, or overheats in a warm cupboard, it can restart the access points it powers, and all the WiFi in the building vanishes together for a minute or two. If your drops cluster on warm afternoons or busy periods, the switch deserves a hard look.
The second is the most common misdiagnosis we see: the broadband line dropping while the WiFi stays up. Your bars stay full — you're still connected to the router — but the internet behind it has gone, so it feels like a WiFi fault. Here's the order that settles it:
- When a drop hits, check a wired computer. If it loses internet at the same moment, the wireless is innocent.
- Read the router's log — most routers keep one, usually under a name like "system log" (menus move between models). Repeated WAN drops or reconnection entries mean the line itself is failing.
- Only if wired connections stay up and the logs are clean is it genuinely a wireless problem.
If the line turns out to be the culprit, the fix is a conversation with your provider — and, for offices that can't afford the downtime, a backup internet connection that takes over automatically.
/05 — THE HONEST BIT
When it's not worth fighting it — and what we'd do
Here's the honest bit: the wrong response to whole-office drops is buying kit on a hunch. We regularly meet offices on their third WiFi booster or second consumer mesh kit — decent products in the right home, but in a congested office their wireless links just add more traffic to airwaves that may already be the problem, and none of them do anything for a full address pool, a failing switch or a dropping line. That's not fixing; that's paying to guess.
Sometimes the real fix costs almost nothing — a bigger address pool, a better channel, one setting on the router. What a real access-point install looks like
When the survey does point at the wireless itself, here's what a proper fix looks like — and it isn't a bigger aerial. A business WiFi installation means cabled access points, usually ceiling-mounted, each fed power and data through one network cable from a healthy PoE switch. Placement comes from the survey, not guesswork: the access points go where your people, walls and dead spots actually are.
They all broadcast one network name, so laptops and phones move around the building without dropping. A router built for business handles a properly sized address pool, visitors go on a separate guest network that can't see your systems, and channels are planned around what your neighbours are doing rather than left on automatic.

Because something shared is failing — not the individual computers. It isn't only a hard limit, either: as device counts climb, a consumer router's WiFi gets slower and less stable well before it refuses connections, and its address pool can simply run out. Why does our office WiFi cut out at random for a minute and then come back?
Brief, random, whole-office drops that fix themselves are a classic sign of a DFS radar event on the 5 GHz band. Many 5 GHz WiFi channels are shared with radar, and the rules require an access point that detects radar — or something resembling it — to leave the channel immediately, cutting everyone off while it moves. Near the Dorset coast and Bournemouth Airport this is a genuinely plausible trigger. The other candidate is a router or switch quietly rebooting; router logs and a room-by-room survey tell the two apart.
Will a mesh WiFi system fix drop-outs in an office?
Sometimes, but often not — and it's worth knowing which before you spend. Consumer mesh kits are excellent in homes, but in a congested office the wireless links between mesh units add more traffic to airwaves that may already be the problem, and they do nothing for a full address pool, a failing switch or a dropping broadband line.
