Outlook add-in not loading, missing from the ribbon or disabled?

When an add-in vanishes from the ribbon, Outlook has usually either turned it off or auto-disabled it for being slow. Here's how to switch it back on, re-enable it properly, and stop Outlook disabling it again — plus one catch to check if you've moved to the new Outlook. Rated 4.9 on Google.

Why it happens

Why your Outlook add-in has disappeared

Add-ins are the extra buttons that other software (like accounting, CRM, encryption or Teams tools) adds to your Outlook ribbon. When one goes missing, it's usually one of these:

  • The add-in has been unticked. In Outlook's COM Add-ins list, an add-in that's inactive simply won't appear on the ribbon.
  • Outlook auto-disabled it for being slow. If an add-in slows Outlook down or crashes it, Outlook can move it to the Disabled Items list to protect performance — and you'll sometimes see a prompt offering to disable a "slow add-in."
  • The add-in is out of date or needs reinstalling. An Outlook or Windows update can leave an older add-in incompatible until it's updated.
  • You're running the new Outlook. The new Outlook doesn't support traditional COM add-ins at all, so a plug-in that worked in classic Outlook may simply not be available there.

The fix

How to get your Outlook add-in loading again

These steps are for classic Outlook. Work through them in order.

  1. Re-tick the add-in. Go to File > Options > Add-ins. At the bottom, set Manage to COM Add-ins and click Go. Tick the box next to your add-in and click OK, then restart Outlook.
  2. Rescue it from Disabled Items. If it's not in the COM list or keeps switching off, go back to File > Options > Add-ins, set Manage to Disabled Items, click Go, select your add-in and click Enable.
  3. Stop Outlook auto-disabling it. If Outlook shows a prompt about a slow add-in, choose to keep it enabled rather than disable it. You can also open File > Slow and Disabled COM Add-ins and choose Always enable this add-in so Outlook stops turning it off.
  4. Run Outlook normally, not as administrator. Add-ins loaded under a normal Outlook session won't appear if you later open Outlook "as administrator," because that's effectively a different context. Close any elevated session and open Outlook the usual way.
  5. Update or reinstall the add-in. If it still won't load, install the latest version from the vendor. An update often restores compatibility after an Outlook or Windows update.
  6. Check it supports your Outlook version. Confirm the add-in supports your build — and note that traditional COM add-ins do not work in the new Outlook, so you may need to switch back to classic Outlook to use it.

// GOOD QUESTIONS

Frequently asked

How do I re-enable a disabled Outlook add-in?

In classic Outlook go to File > Options > Add-ins. Set Manage to COM Add-ins and click Go, then tick your add-in. If it's not there or keeps disabling, set Manage to Disabled Items instead, click Go, select the add-in and click Enable. Restart Outlook afterwards.

Why does Outlook keep disabling my add-in?

Outlook auto-disables add-ins it thinks are slowing it down or causing crashes. When you see the slow-add-in prompt, choose to keep it enabled. You can also open File > Slow and Disabled COM Add-ins and pick Always enable this add-in so Outlook stops turning it off.

My add-in is missing from the ribbon but shows as active — what now?

First close any Outlook session you opened as administrator and reopen Outlook normally, since add-ins loaded in a standard session won't show in an elevated one. If it's still missing, reinstall or update the add-in, then confirm it's ticked under File > Options > Add-ins > COM Add-ins.

Does my add-in work in the new Outlook?

Traditional COM add-ins do not work in the new Outlook — it only supports newer web-based add-ins. If a plug-in that worked before has vanished, check whether you've switched to the new Outlook; you may need to toggle back to classic Outlook to keep using it.

Should I run Outlook as administrator to load an add-in?

No — that usually causes the opposite problem. Add-ins registered for your normal user session won't appear when Outlook runs elevated. Always open Outlook the standard way, not via Run as administrator, unless a vendor specifically tells you otherwise.
