Outlook fix · classic Outlook
Outlook autocomplete not working and your name list disappeared?
When you start typing an address and no suggestions appear, autocomplete has almost always just been switched off or the suggestion list has been reset. Here's how to turn it back on and let it rebuild — plus why in cached mode it should follow you between PCs. Rated 4.9 on Google.

Why it happens
Why Outlook autocomplete stops suggesting names
The autocomplete list (also called the suggestion or nickname list) is the little dropdown of names and addresses that appears as you type into the To, Cc or Bcc box. When it stops working, it's usually one of these:
- The setting has been switched off. A single tick box in Outlook's options controls whether suggestions appear at all — an update or a stray click can clear it.
- The list was emptied or reset. After clearing it, or after a new profile, the list starts blank and has nothing to suggest yet.
- The list has become corrupt. Occasionally the stored list gets damaged and needs emptying so Outlook can rebuild a clean one.
The good news: the autocomplete list is self-healing. It rebuilds itself as you send email, so even a completely empty list re-learns your regular contacts within a few days of normal use.

The fix
How to get Outlook autocomplete working again
These steps are for classic Outlook. Work through them in order.
- Switch the setting back on. Go to File > Options > Mail and scroll to the Send messages section. Tick Use Auto-Complete List to suggest names when typing in the To, Cc, and Bcc lines, then click OK. Start a new email and test.
- Let it relearn. If the setting was already on but the list is empty, just send a few emails as normal. The list saves each recipient as you send, so your regular contacts reappear in the suggestions over the next few days.
- Empty a corrupt list and start fresh. If suggestions are wrong, stuck or won't appear, go back to File > Options > Mail, and under Send messages click Empty Auto-Complete List, then confirm with Yes. This permanently clears the list and lets Outlook build a clean one as you send — so only do it if the list is misbehaving.
- Create a new mail profile if it still misbehaves. If autocomplete remains broken after emptying it, a corrupt profile may be to blame. Creating a fresh mail profile (Control Panel > Mail) gives Outlook a clean start; in Cached Exchange Mode your existing list re-downloads from the mailbox, since it's stored there rather than only on the PC.
Handy to know: in Cached Exchange Mode the autocomplete list is stored as a hidden item in your mailbox, not just on the one PC. That means it roams with you — sign in on a new computer with the same Microsoft 365 or Exchange account and your suggestions come with you. If they don't, that's a sign the account isn't fully cached or the list needs a rebuild.

// GOOD QUESTIONS
Frequently asked
How do I turn Outlook autocomplete back on?
In classic Outlook go to File > Options > Mail, scroll to Send messages, and tick Use Auto-Complete List to suggest names when typing in the To, Cc, and Bcc lines, then click OK. Start a new email and begin typing an address to test it.
Why is my autocomplete list empty after a new profile or PC?
A brand-new profile starts with an empty list. In Cached Exchange Mode it should re-download from your mailbox, since the list is stored there as a hidden item and roams between computers. If it stays empty, just send a few emails — the list relearns your regular contacts as you go.
Will I lose my suggestions if I empty the Auto-Complete List?
Emptying the list clears all current suggestions permanently, so only do it if the list is corrupt or misbehaving. It's not a disaster though — Outlook rebuilds the list automatically as you send email, so your regular contacts return within a few days of normal use.
How does Outlook rebuild the autocomplete list?
Every time you send an email, Outlook adds the recipients to the suggestion list. So there's no import needed — normal day-to-day sending re-teaches it. Your most-used addresses come back first because you email them most often.
Should my autocomplete follow me to a new computer?
Yes, if you use Cached Exchange Mode with a Microsoft 365 or Exchange account. The list is stored as a hidden item in your mailbox, so it syncs down to each PC you sign in on. If it doesn't appear, the account may not be fully cached — that's something we can check and fix remotely.

Yes. We connect with your permission, confirm the setting, empty a corrupt list if needed and check your cached-mode setup so suggestions come back. We phone first, you watch throughout, and access ends when we're done. Call 01202 775566.
