Outlook contacts missing or disappeared after an update?
In most cases your contacts are not actually gone — Outlook is just showing the wrong folder or account after an update, or your profile needs a quick refresh. Here's how to find them again, plus the one thing to check before you panic about lost data. Rated 4.9 on Google.

Why it happens
Why your Outlook contacts have vanished
Nine times out of ten your contacts are safe and Outlook is simply looking in the wrong place. The most common causes are:
- You're viewing the wrong account's People folder. If you have more than one account in Outlook, the contacts panel may be showing an empty local folder rather than the one holding your addresses.
- A view filter is hiding them. A leftover filter or sort in the People view can make a full contacts list look empty.
- A Windows or Outlook update knocked the profile out of sync. After an update, classic Outlook sometimes fails to redraw the People view or resync the account.
- They were local-only contacts in a PST that is no longer attached. Contacts saved only in a local data file don't live in the cloud, so if that PST is disconnected they disappear from view.
For a Microsoft 365 or Outlook.com account, your contacts live in the cloud — so the quickest sanity check is to sign in to Outlook on the web. If they're there, your data is completely safe and this is purely a display or sync problem on the PC.

The fix
How to get your Outlook contacts back
Work through these in order — most people are sorted by step 3.
- Confirm your data is safe on the web. Go to outlook.office.com (or outlook.com), sign in, and open People. If your contacts are there, you've only got a display issue to fix — no data has been lost.
- Check you're on the right People folder. In classic Outlook click People at the bottom left, then look under My Contacts in the folder pane. Click each Contacts folder in turn — the one tied to your main account is the one you want, not a local or archive folder.
- Clear any view filter. On the View tab choose Reset View (or set the arrangement back to a simple list). A stuck filter is a very common reason a full list looks empty. Reset View only restores the layout — it never deletes contacts.
- Refresh the People view via Safe Mode. Fully close Outlook, then hold Ctrl as you reopen it and keep holding until Outlook asks if you want to start in Safe Mode — click Yes. Let it load, then close and reopen normally. This nudges Outlook to rebuild the People view after an update.
- Check the address book dropdown. Start a new email, click To, and use the Address Book dropdown (top right) to switch between your address books — your contacts may be filed under a different one.
- Re-sync the account, or build a fresh profile. If the web shows your contacts but the desktop still won't, remove and re-add the account (or create a new mail profile in Control Panel > Mail). A rebuilt profile re-downloads all your cloud contacts automatically.
One important caution: if your contacts were stored only in a local PST file (never synced to the cloud), don't create a new profile before re-attaching that PST — the addresses live in that file, not on the server. If you're not sure whether yours are local or cloud, stop and let us check first so nothing is lost.

// GOOD QUESTIONS
Frequently asked
Are my Outlook contacts gone for good?
Almost never. For Microsoft 365 and Outlook.com accounts your contacts are stored in the cloud, so signing in to Outlook on the web will usually show them safe and sound — the problem is display or sync on your PC, not lost data. Only contacts saved solely in a disconnected local PST need that file re-attached to reappear.
My contacts disappeared right after a Windows update — is that the cause?
Very likely. Updates can leave classic Outlook failing to redraw the People view or resync the account. Closing Outlook, reopening it once in Safe Mode (hold Ctrl as it starts, then click Yes), then reopening it normally usually restores the view. If not, re-adding the account forces a fresh sync from the cloud.
Why can I see my contacts on my phone but not on my computer?
That confirms your contacts are safely in the cloud and the issue is only on the desktop. The fix is to make the desktop resync — reset the People view, or remove and re-add the account so Outlook pulls the contacts down again. No re-creating needed.
How do I check I'm looking at the right Contacts folder?
In classic Outlook click People, then under My Contacts in the folder pane click each Contacts folder in turn — the addresses may be in a folder you're not currently viewing. If a folder holds your contacts but they don't show when you click To in a new email, right-click that folder, choose Properties, open the Outlook Address Book tab and tick 'Show this folder as an e-mail Address Book' so it appears in your address book.
Should I create a new Outlook profile to fix missing contacts?
A new profile re-downloads all cloud contacts and often fixes a corrupt profile after an update — but only do it once you've confirmed your contacts are in the cloud. If they were local-only in a PST, re-attach that PST first, or the addresses won't come back. When in doubt, let us check before making changes.
