Plain English
What error 0x80040610 actually means
When Outlook throws 0x80040610 during a send/receive, it's telling you that a message it's trying to move is either too big for the server or the item itself has gone corrupt. Because Outlook processes the Outbox in order, that one bad message sits at the front of the queue and jams everything behind it — so nothing sends and, on some accounts, nothing receives either.
You'll often see this phrased two ways: "the message being sent exceeds the message size established for this user" (an oversized attachment) or a generic "reported error (0x80040610): sending/receiving reported error" (a corrupt item or a damaged Outlook data file, the .pst). The good news: both come down to the same short list of fixes, and none of them are risky if you follow the steps in order.
This affects classic Outlook on Windows — Outlook 2016, 2019, 2021 and the desktop app in Microsoft 365. We support Windows and the Outlook Android app; we don't cover Apple Mail or Mac Outlook.

Do this first
Clear the stuck message from the Outbox
Nine times out of ten this is a single message with a big attachment sitting in your Outbox. While Outlook keeps trying to send it, it stays locked, so you have to stop the sending first.
- Go offline so Outlook stops retrying: on the ribbon, Send / Receive tab, click Work Offline.
- Open the Outbox folder. Drag the stuck message out into Drafts — you usually can't delete it directly while it's mid-send, but you can move it.
- Open it from Drafts, remove the oversized attachment (anything over ~20 MB will bounce on most mail servers), and either send it a smaller way — a OneDrive or WeTransfer link — or delete the message if you no longer need it.
- Empty Deleted Items so the large item is fully gone.
- Turn Work Offline back off and press F9 (Send/Receive All Folders). Everything queued behind it should now flow.
If the error's gone, you're done. If it comes straight back with an empty Outbox, the data file itself is the culprit — carry on below.
If it keeps returning
Repair the data file with scanpst.exe, then compact it
A persistent 0x80040610 with nothing in the Outbox usually means your .pst (or .ost) data file has minor corruption. Microsoft ships a free repair tool for exactly this — the Inbox Repair Tool, scanpst.exe. Close Outlook completely before you start.
- Find SCANPST.EXE. On 64-bit installs of Outlook 2016, 2019, 2021 or Microsoft 365 it lives at
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\root\Office16; on 32-bit Outlook it's underC:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Office16instead. Double-click it. - Click Browse and point it at your data file. Personal .pst files are usually in
C:\Users\<you>\Documents\Outlook Files. - Click Start. It scans and reports any inconsistencies. If it finds errors, tick Make a backup of scanned file before repairing, then click Repair. Run it two or three times until it comes back clean.
- Reopen Outlook and test with F9.
Finally, compact the file so it shrinks and tidies itself: File > Account Settings > Account Settings > Data Files, select your PST, click Settings > Compact Now. A slimmer, defragmented file is far less likely to jam again.
One safety note: for a POP3 account your PST is the only copy of that mail, so let scanpst make its backup first. For IMAP, Microsoft 365 or Outlook.com accounts the mail lives on the server and re-downloads, so there's nothing to lose.

// GOOD QUESTIONS
Frequently asked
What does Outlook error 0x80040610 mean?
It's a send/receive error that means a message Outlook is trying to move is either too large for your mail server or has become corrupt, jamming the Outbox. It can also point to minor corruption in your Outlook data file (.pst). Both are fixable in a few minutes.
Why is the same message stuck in my Outbox with error 0x80040610?
Almost always an oversized attachment. Most mail servers reject messages over about 20–25 MB, so Outlook keeps retrying and the message locks the queue. Click Work Offline, drag the message to Drafts, remove or shrink the attachment (send big files as a OneDrive or WeTransfer link instead), then go back online and press F9.
Do I need to run scanpst.exe to fix 0x80040610?
Only if clearing the stuck message doesn't stop the error returning. If 0x80040610 keeps appearing with an empty Outbox, your data file likely has minor corruption, and the Inbox Repair Tool (scanpst.exe) fixes it. Close Outlook first, and let the tool make its backup — especially on POP3 accounts, where the PST is your only copy of the mail.
Where is scanpst.exe on Windows?
For 64-bit Outlook 2016, 2019, 2021 and Microsoft 365 it's usually at C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\SCANPST.EXE; on 32-bit Outlook look in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Office16 instead. If it's not there, search your Start menu for "scanpst". It won't appear in your list of apps — you launch the .exe directly.
Will fixing this error delete my emails?
No, if you're careful. Removing an oversized attachment only affects that one outgoing message. scanpst.exe repairs rather than deletes, and it offers to back up the file first. The one thing to watch is a POP3 account, where the PST is the only copy of your mail — take the backup before repairing. On IMAP, Microsoft 365 or Outlook.com, your mail is safe on the server and simply re-downloads.
