Outlook Fix - Classic Outlook (Windows)
Fix Outlook error 0x80042108 in minutes
Error 0x80042108 means Outlook cannot reach your incoming (POP3 or IMAP) mail server, so nothing new arrives. It is almost always a wrong server name or port, a firewall or antivirus email-scanner blocking Outlook, or a VPN in the way - usually after your provider changed servers or an update tightened security. Here is the accurate fix for classic Outlook on Windows, and if you would rather not touch the settings, we will sort it remotely in minutes. Rated 4.9 on Google.

What it means
What error 0x80042108 actually means
The full message reads "Outlook is unable to connect to your incoming (POP3) server" - or the IMAP equivalent. In plain English, Outlook tried to log in to the mailbox where your email lives, waited, and got no usable reply. Your outgoing (sending) side may still work, which is why you can sometimes send but receive nothing.
Because no mail is being deleted from the server, your email is safe. Nothing is lost - it is simply sitting on your provider's server waiting for Outlook to connect. That is good news: fixing the connection brings everything down again.
The usual triggers are: your email provider or ISP changed their server names or ports, an antivirus "email scanning" feature started intercepting the connection, a Windows or firewall update tightened the rules, or a VPN is routing you somewhere the mail server rejects.

Step by step
How to fix 0x80042108 in classic Outlook
Work through these in order. Have your correct incoming and outgoing server names and ports to hand - your provider publishes them (search "[your provider] IMAP settings") or we can confirm them for you.
- Check your internet first. Open a website in your browser. If nothing loads, the problem is your connection, not Outlook - restart your router and try again.
- Disconnect any VPN. If you use a VPN (work or privacy), turn it off and click Send/Receive. VPNs frequently break the route to a mail server.
- Verify the incoming server and port. Go to File > Account Settings > Account Settings, select your email account, click Change, then More Settings > Advanced. Confirm the incoming server matches your provider exactly and the port is right: IMAP = 993 with SSL/TLS, or POP = 995 with SSL/TLS. A single wrong letter or an old port will cause this error.
- Run Test Account Settings. Back on the account details screen click Test Account Settings. Green ticks confirm Outlook can now reach the server; a red X on the incoming task points straight at the setting to correct.
- Temporarily disable the antivirus email scanner. Many security suites (and some free antivirus) scan POP/IMAP and can block it after an update. Turn off the "email protection" / "mail shield" component and test. If that fixes it, add Outlook as an exception rather than leaving protection off.
- Allow Outlook through Windows Firewall. Search Allow an app through Windows Firewall, click Change settings, and make sure Outlook is ticked for both Private and Public.
- Check your PC clock. A wrong date or time breaks the secure (SSL) handshake. Right-click the clock > Adjust date and time and switch on "Set time automatically".
If Test Account Settings still fails after all that, the mailbox itself may be full or your provider may have changed their requirements - that is the point to let us take over.

// GOOD QUESTIONS
Frequently asked
Will I lose any emails while error 0x80042108 is showing?
No. The error only stops Outlook connecting to fetch mail - your messages are still safely on your provider's server. As soon as the connection is fixed, everything downloads normally. Nothing is deleted while the error is present.
Why did 0x80042108 suddenly appear when nothing changed on my side?
The change is usually at the other end. Email providers and ISPs regularly update server names, ports or security requirements, and antivirus/Windows updates can tighten what is allowed. Any of these can break a connection that worked perfectly the day before.
What are the correct incoming server ports for Outlook?
For a secure connection use IMAP on port 993 with SSL/TLS, or POP on port 995 with SSL/TLS. Your outgoing (SMTP) server is separate. If you are unsure of the exact server names, your provider publishes them - or we can confirm and set them for you.
Could my antivirus really be causing this?
Yes, very often. Security suites that scan incoming email sit between Outlook and the server, and an update can start blocking the connection. Temporarily disabling the email-scanning component is a quick test; if it helps, add Outlook as an exception instead of leaving protection off.
I use the new Outlook, not classic - do these steps apply?
These exact menu paths are for classic Outlook on Windows, where you set the server, port and encryption directly. The new Outlook does support POP and IMAP, but only via a stripped-back 'Advanced setup' screen that is far more limited and can be unreliable with third-party providers. We support Windows and Android; if you are on the new Outlook we can still diagnose the connection remotely.
