Outlook rules not running in the New Outlook
If your rules stopped working the moment you switched to the New Outlook, it's because the old "client-only" rules that lived on your desktop don't come across — the New Outlook only runs server-side rules. The fix is to recreate them under Settings > Mail > Rules so they run in the cloud 24/7 (even with your PC switched off), make sure each one is toggled on, then use "Run rule now" to tidy up existing mail. Rated 4.9 on Google.

Why it happens
Why your rules stopped after moving to the New Outlook
Classic Outlook let you build two kinds of rules. Server-side rules run on Microsoft's servers, so they fire for every message the instant it arrives — whether or not your computer is on. Client-only rules ran on your PC using desktop-only tricks (moving mail into a local PST folder, playing a sound, running a script or program). Those client-only rules physically can't work anywhere but on that one machine.
The New Outlook is a rebuilt, cloud-first app and it doesn't run client-only rules at all. When you switched over, any rule that depended on your desktop simply didn't come with you and stopped firing. You may even see a rule flagged with "This rule can't be edited or viewed" — that's a leftover client-only rule the New Outlook can see but can't run.
The answer isn't to fight it — it's to recreate those rules as clean server-side rules. As a bonus, they'll then run around the clock, on your phone and webmail too, not just when this PC is open.

The fix
Step-by-step: rebuild your rules so they run again
- Open your rules. In the New Outlook, click the Settings gear (top right), then Mail > Rules. This is where all server-side rules live.
- Check what's there. Note any rule marked "This rule can't be edited or viewed" — that's a dead client-only rule. Jot down what it was meant to do (e.g. "move mail from the accounts team to the Finance folder") before you remove it.
- Create a fresh rule. Click Add new rule. Give it a name, choose a condition (for example, From a certain sender or Subject includes a word), then choose an action (for example, Move to a folder or Mark as read). Save it.
- Make sure it's switched on. Back on the Rules list, check the toggle next to the rule is on. A rule that exists but is toggled off does nothing.
- Apply it to mail that's already in your inbox. New rules only act on new mail by default. Use Run rule now beside the rule to sweep it across messages already sitting in your inbox.
- Delete the old broken rule. Once the new server-side version is working, remove the old "can't be edited" rule so it isn't cluttering the list.
One honest limitation: a handful of advanced actions — like "run a program", "run a script", or moving mail into a local PST file — are desktop-only and simply can't be recreated as server-side rules. Those only work in classic Outlook. If a rule you rely on needs one of those, keep classic Outlook for that job (or let us suggest a cleaner way to achieve the same thing).

// GOOD QUESTIONS
Frequently asked
Why did my Outlook rules stop working when I switched to the New Outlook?
Because the New Outlook only runs server-side (cloud) rules. Any client-only rule that lived on your old desktop — moving mail to a local folder, running a script, playing a sound — didn't transfer and stopped firing. Recreate them under Settings > Mail > Rules and they'll run again, 24/7.
What's the difference between a server-side rule and a client-only rule?
A server-side rule runs on Microsoft's servers the instant mail arrives, even with your PC off, and works across all your devices. A client-only rule ran only on one computer using desktop-only actions. The New Outlook supports server-side rules only.
My rule says "This rule can't be edited or viewed" — what do I do?
That's a leftover client-only rule the New Outlook can see but can't run. Note what it was supposed to do, create a new server-side rule that does the same thing under Settings > Mail > Rules, toggle it on, then delete the old one.
How do I apply a new rule to emails already in my inbox?
New rules only act on new mail by default. In Settings > Mail > Rules, use "Run rule now" next to the rule to sweep it across the messages already sitting in your inbox.
Can I still use a rule that runs a program or moves mail to a PST file?
Not in the New Outlook — those are desktop-only actions that only work in classic Outlook. If you depend on one, keep classic Outlook for that task, or ask us and we'll often suggest a tidier cloud-friendly way to get the same result.
