New Outlook fix — Windows

New Outlook is stuck in a sign-in loop

When new Outlook keeps asking you to sign in over and over — accepting your password then immediately asking again — it's a broken authentication token. Clearing the saved credentials and resetting the app breaks the loop. Here's the exact sequence, and we can do it with you remotely in minutes. Rated 4.9 on Google.

Why this happens

A broken sign-in token, not a wrong password

A sign-in loop feels like new Outlook has forgotten who you are — you type your password, it seems to accept it, and a second later it's asking again. You could type the correct password a hundred times and never get in. That's the tell-tale sign this isn't a password problem at all; it's a broken or half-saved authentication token.

New Outlook signs in through a web-based Microsoft flow (using the Edge WebView2 component built into Windows). If the token it receives gets corrupted, or an old cached credential clashes with the new one, the app can't hold on to a valid session — so it drops straight back to the sign-in screen. Two other things commonly trigger it: a wrong PC clock, which makes the security token look expired the instant it arrives, and antivirus or firewall software blocking the Microsoft sign-in redirect midway through.

The fix is to clear everything the app is clinging to — signed-in sessions, saved credentials and the app's own local data — and let it fetch a clean token from scratch.

The fix

Clear, reset and re-add — in order

Work through these in sequence. Your emails are safe throughout — they live on the server and re-sync after you sign back in.

  1. Sign out of Office everywhere. If you have any Office app open (Word, Excel, Teams, classic Outlook), go to File > Office Account > Sign out in each, then close them all.
  2. Check your clock is automatic. Go to Settings > Time & language > Date & time and turn Set time automatically and Set time zone automatically ON. A clock that's even a few minutes out will break sign-in.
  3. Clear the saved credentials. Click Start, open Credential Manager, choose Windows Credentials, and under Generic Credentials remove any entries starting with MicrosoftOffice, Outlook, OneAuth or MicrosoftAccount. This clears only stored passwords, never your mail.
  4. Reset the new Outlook app. Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Outlook (new), click the three dots > Advanced options, and click Repair first. If the loop continues, come back and click Reset — this clears the app's local cache and cookies and forces a clean sign-in. (Reset clears the app's local data on this PC; your mailbox on the server is untouched.)
  5. Re-add your account. Open new Outlook, and if it's still looping, click the Settings gear (top right) > Accounts > Email accounts, choose Manage next to the affected account and click Remove, then use Add Account to add it back. This pulls a fresh token and the correct server settings straight from Microsoft.

If it still loops after all that, temporarily pause your third-party antivirus or firewall and try signing in once more — if that works, add an exception for Outlook rather than leaving protection off. At that point it's worth letting us take a look.

// GOOD QUESTIONS

Frequently asked

Why does new Outlook keep asking me to sign in over and over?

Because the app can't hold on to a valid sign-in token. Usually an old cached credential clashes with the new one, or the token is corrupted. Clearing the Office and Outlook entries in Windows Credential Manager and resetting new Outlook lets it fetch a clean token and breaks the loop.

Will resetting new Outlook delete my emails?

No. Reset clears the app's local data and settings on your PC, but your mailbox lives on Microsoft's servers. After you sign back in, your emails, folders and calendar re-sync automatically. It's still wise to know your password before you start.

Could the wrong date and time really cause a sign-in loop?

Yes — it's a surprisingly common cause. Security tokens are time-stamped, so if your PC clock is wrong the token looks expired the instant it arrives and sign-in fails. Turning on Set time automatically in Windows Date & time settings fixes it.

I reset the app and cleared credentials but it still loops — what next?

The most likely remaining cause is antivirus or firewall software blocking the Microsoft sign-in redirect. Pause your third-party security software briefly and try signing in once. If that works, add an Outlook exception rather than leaving protection off — or call us to set it up safely.

Does this apply to classic Outlook too?

This page is for new Outlook, which signs in through a web-based flow and has its own Reset option in Windows app settings. Classic Outlook loops are usually fixed by clearing Credential Manager and repairing the account. If you're not sure which version you have, call us and we'll check.
