Fix Outlook stuck on loading profile

When classic Outlook freezes on the "Loading Profile" splash and never opens, it's nearly always a stuck background process or a misbehaving add-in — not a lost mailbox. Below is exactly what to do, in the right order, to get Outlook opening again. Every step here is safe for your email, and where a step could touch your data we say so clearly. If you'd rather not fiddle, we'll fix it remotely in minutes. Rated 4.9 on Google.

What it means

Why Outlook hangs on "Loading Profile"

The "Loading Profile" splash is the moment Outlook opens your mail profile and loads its add-ins. If it freezes there, one of three things is usually happening: a previous Outlook (or Office) process is still running in the background and blocking a clean start, a third-party add-in is hanging during load, or the graphics/rendering or the mail profile itself has a fault.

This is a startup problem, not a lost-email problem. For Microsoft 365, Exchange, IMAP and Google Workspace accounts your mail lives on the server, so even the heavier fixes below won't lose it — Outlook re-downloads it. Work through the steps in order and stop the moment Outlook opens normally.

The fix

How to fix Outlook stuck on loading profile

These steps are for classic Outlook for Windows, in order — most people are sorted by step 2 or 3.

  1. End all Office tasks first. Right-click the taskbar and open Task Manager. Under Processes, look for anything Office-related still running — Outlook, Microsoft Office, and any leftover Teams or Skype for Business helpers. Right-click each and choose End task. This clears a half-closed process that's blocking startup.
  2. Start Outlook in safe mode. Press Windows key + R, type outlook.exe /safe and press Enter. Safe mode loads Outlook with add-ins switched off. If it opens now, an add-in is your culprit — go to step 3. If it still hangs, skip to step 4.
  3. Disable add-ins one at a time. With Outlook open in safe mode, go to File > Options > Add-ins. At the bottom, set Manage to COM Add-ins and click Go. Untick everything, click OK, and restart Outlook normally. If it opens, re-enable the add-ins one at a time, restarting between each, until the one that hangs it reveals itself — then leave that one off.
  4. Run an Office Quick Repair. Go to Control Panel > Programs and Features, click Microsoft 365 / Office, choose Change, then Quick Repair. This fixes damaged Office files without touching your mail and doesn't need the internet.
  5. Turn off hardware graphics acceleration. If Outlook opens in safe mode but hangs normally, a graphics driver can be the cause. In File > Options > Advanced, under Display, tick Disable hardware graphics acceleration and restart. (Note: current Office builds increasingly manage this automatically and the tick-box may be absent — if you don't see it, move on.)
  6. Create a new mail profile (last resort). Close Outlook and go to Control Panel > Mail > Show Profiles > Add. Create a fresh profile, re-add your account, and set it as the default. For a Microsoft 365 or Outlook.com account the Control Panel dialog can't complete the modern sign-in, so instead hold the Shift key while starting Outlook (or run outlook.exe /manageprofiles) to reach the profile picker, then add the account from Outlook's own sign-in screen. Your mail re-downloads from the server, so nothing is lost — but back up any local-only PST archive first (see below).

Before the last resort

When a new profile is safe (and when to back up)

A new mail profile is a clean, common fix and it's safe for anything stored on the server — Microsoft 365, Exchange, IMAP and Google Workspace all re-download your mail automatically. The one thing that doesn't come back on its own is a local-only PST: an old Archive or Personal Folders file that lives only on your PC.

Before you add a new profile, open File > Account Settings > Data Files (from another PC or before the freeze if you can), note where each PST sits, close Outlook, and copy those .pst files somewhere safe. If Outlook won't open far enough to check, don't force it — that's exactly what we'll verify for you remotely so nothing local is lost.

// GOOD QUESTIONS

Frequently asked

Why is my Outlook stuck on the loading profile screen?

Usually a leftover Office process is blocking a clean start, or a third-party add-in is hanging during load. Less often it's a graphics-driver issue or a damaged mail profile. It's a startup fault, not lost email — your mailbox is still safe on the server.

How do I start Outlook in safe mode?

Press Windows key + R, type outlook.exe /safe and press Enter. Safe mode loads Outlook with all add-ins switched off. If Outlook opens this way, an add-in is causing the hang — disable them one at a time to find it.

How do I disable Outlook add-ins to fix the freeze?

Open Outlook in safe mode, go to File > Options > Add-ins, set the Manage box to COM Add-ins and click Go. Untick everything, restart normally, then re-enable them one at a time until the one that hangs Outlook shows itself. Leave that one off.

Will creating a new Outlook profile delete my email?

No, not for mailbox mail. Microsoft 365, Exchange, IMAP and Google Workspace accounts re-download from the server into the new profile. The only thing to protect is a local-only PST archive stored on your PC — back that up before you switch profiles.

What if Outlook is still stuck after ending tasks and safe mode?

Run an Office Quick Repair (Control Panel > Programs > Microsoft 365 > Change > Quick Repair), then try disabling hardware graphics acceleration, and only as a last resort create a new mail profile. If it still hangs, the profile or data file may be damaged — that's worth a proper look.
