Classic Outlook won't open after an update
A Windows or Microsoft 365 update has left classic Outlook refusing to launch — nothing happens, or an error flashes up. It's almost always a bad add-in or a half-applied update, and none of it touches your email: your messages live safely on the server. We can fix it remotely today. Rated 4.9 on Google.

Why It Happens
Why an update stops Outlook opening
When Windows or Microsoft 365 installs an update, a few things can leave classic Outlook (the older desktop app with the ribbon and your folders down the left) unable to start. The most common cause by far is an add-in that no longer matches the updated Outlook — an old toolbar from your antivirus, a CRM plug-in, Teams or an accounts package — which trips Outlook up the moment it loads.
Less often, the update itself was applied incompletely, leaving Office files in a mixed state, or a specific Windows or Office build introduced a bug. The reassuring part: this is all about the program, not your mail. Your emails, calendar and contacts are on the server (or in your local data file) and are not affected by any of the steps below — so you can work through them with confidence.

The Fix
Step-by-step: get Outlook opening again
- Start Outlook in safe mode. Press Windows key + R to open the Run box, type outlook /safe and press Enter. Safe mode loads Outlook with add-ins switched off. If it opens now, you've found the culprit — go to the next step.
- Disable the add-ins. With Outlook open in safe mode, go to File > Options > Add-ins. At the bottom, set Manage: COM Add-ins and click Go. Untick everything, click OK, then close and reopen Outlook normally. Once it's opening reliably, re-enable your add-ins one at a time, restarting between each, until the faulty one reveals itself — leave that one switched off.
- Repair Office. If safe mode didn't help, close Outlook and go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Microsoft 365 > Modify. Choose Quick Repair first — it's fast and works offline. If Outlook still won't launch, come back and run Online Repair, which reinstalls the Office files (it needs an internet connection and takes longer).
- Roll back the update that broke it. If a specific update is to blame, undo it. For a bad Office build, roll Office back to a previous version. For a bad Windows update, go to Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates, remove the most recent one, and restart. Then reopen Outlook.
- Last resort — a fresh mail profile. If nothing else works, go to Control Panel > Mail (Microsoft Outlook) > Show Profiles > Add, create a new profile and set Outlook to use it. For a mailbox on the server (Microsoft 365, Exchange or Outlook.com) your mail re-downloads automatically, so nothing is lost.
One caution: if you use an older POP account, your only copy of that mail may sit in a local data file. Before creating a new profile or removing anything, let us check what type of account you have so nothing gets left behind.
The Reassurance
Your email is safe the whole time
Whatever the update has done to the app, your email itself is almost always safe on the server. Starting in safe mode, disabling an add-in, repairing Office and rolling back an update are all changes to the program — they don't delete, move or rewrite your messages. Even a fresh mail profile simply re-downloads your mailbox from the server.
If you'd rather not poke around in Settings and the Control Panel, we do this every day. We connect over Splashtop SOS — we phone you first, you watch your screen the whole time, and access ends the moment it's done. Most update problems are sorted in minutes, remotely, the same day. If remote can't do it, we come to you across Bournemouth, Poole, Christchurch and Dorset.

// GOOD QUESTIONS
Frequently asked
Will any of these steps delete my emails?
No. Safe mode, disabling add-ins, repairing Office and rolling back an update all affect the program, not your mail. Your emails, calendar and contacts stay on the server and are untouched. Even a new profile just re-downloads your mailbox.
Outlook opens fine in safe mode but not normally — what does that mean?
It means a faulty add-in is stopping it. In safe mode go to File > Options > Add-ins, set Manage: COM Add-ins, click Go and untick everything, then restart normally. Re-enable them one at a time to find the guilty one and leave that one off.
Should I run Quick Repair or Online Repair first?
Always try Quick Repair first — it's fast, works offline and fixes most cases. Only run Online Repair if Quick Repair doesn't do it; it reinstalls the Office files, needs an internet connection and takes longer.
A recent Windows update seems to be the cause. Can I remove just that one?
Yes. Go to Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates, remove the most recent update and restart. If Outlook then opens, that update was the problem — hold off reinstalling it until Microsoft ships a fix.
Does this apply to the New Outlook too?
No — these steps (outlook /safe, COM add-ins, Office repair) are for classic Outlook for Windows. The New Outlook is a rebuilt app with different fixes. If you're on New Outlook, give us a call and we'll sort the right one.
