Outlook fix - classic
Outlook Working Offline won't turn off
If Outlook is stuck on Working Offline, the quick fix is to click the Work Offline button on the Send/Receive tab so it un-highlights and goes back online. If it's greyed out or won't budge, that points to a bad add-in, a corrupt profile or a failed account - and we can fix it remotely in minutes. Rated 4.9 on Google.

The quick answer
Turn Working Offline back off in one click
Nine times out of ten this is a single toggle that's been switched by accident - a stray click or a keyboard shortcut. Here's the fix for classic Outlook on Windows:
- Open Outlook and click the Send / Receive tab on the ribbon.
- Look at the far right for the Work Offline button. If it's highlighted (shaded in), Outlook is offline.
- Click Work Offline once. The button text stays the same, but it should un-highlight and, within a few seconds, the status bar at the bottom right should change from Working Offline to Connected or Trying to connect.
That's it - your mail will start flowing again. If the button won't change, or it's greyed out so you can't click it, keep reading.

If Work Offline is greyed out or won't toggle
A stuck or greyed-out button means Outlook can't actually reach your mail server, or something is jamming the works. Work through these in order - stop as soon as your mail comes back:
- Check your internet is actually up. Open a website in your browser. If nothing loads, the problem is your connection, not Outlook - restart your router and try again.
- Restart Outlook properly. Close it fully, wait ten seconds and reopen. A quick restart clears a surprising number of these.
- Start in Safe Mode to rule out a bad add-in. Press the Windows key + R, type outlook.exe /safe and press Enter. If Outlook connects fine in Safe Mode, a faulty add-in is to blame - go to File > Options > Add-ins, set Manage: COM Add-ins at the bottom, click Go and untick anything you don't recognise.
- Repair the account. Go to File > Account Settings > Account Settings, click your email account, then Repair and follow the prompts. This re-checks the server connection without touching your mail.
- Create a fresh profile if it still sticks. A corrupt profile is a common culprit. In Windows, open Control Panel > Mail (Microsoft Outlook) > Show Profiles > Add, set up a new profile and open Outlook with it. On Exchange, Microsoft 365, Outlook.com or IMAP your mail re-downloads from the server, so nothing is lost.
Good to know: repairing an account or making a new profile won't delete your emails on a normal Exchange, Microsoft 365, Outlook.com or IMAP account - they live on the mail server and simply re-sync. The one exception is a POP account, where the only copy may be on your PC: don't remove a POP profile before you've backed up its data file, or you can lose that mail for good. If you're on POP, shout before you start and we'll back it up first.

// GOOD QUESTIONS
Frequently asked
Why does my Outlook keep saying Working Offline?
Usually the Work Offline button on the Send/Receive tab has been switched on by accident. Click it once so it un-highlights and Outlook goes back online (the button text doesn't change - only the highlight does). If it flips back to offline on its own, that points to a flaky internet connection, a bad add-in or a profile that needs repairing.
The Work Offline button is greyed out - what now?
A greyed-out button usually means Outlook can't reach your mail server at all, or you're in Safe Mode. First check your internet is working, then restart Outlook, try Safe Mode (outlook.exe /safe) to rule out an add-in, and repair the account under File > Account Settings. If it persists, a new Outlook profile almost always clears it.
Will I lose emails if I repair my account or make a new profile?
No - with a normal Exchange, Microsoft 365, Outlook.com or IMAP account your mail lives on the server and simply re-downloads. The one exception is a POP account, where the only copy may be on your PC. On POP, removing the profile can delete that mail, so back up your data file first (or let us do it) before making any changes.
Is Working Offline the same as being disconnected?
Not quite. Working Offline is a setting you (or a stray click) can turn on and off - Outlook deliberately stops talking to the server. Being disconnected means Outlook is trying to connect but can't, usually because of internet or server trouble. The greyed-out button is often the second problem wearing the first one's clothes.
I clicked Work Offline off but it still won't send or receive.
Give it a minute to reconnect, then press Send/Receive All Folders (or F9). If it still won't sync, restart Outlook, check your internet, and repair the account. Persistent sync failures after coming back online usually mean a corrupt OST file or profile - an easy remote fix for us.
Can you fix this without me handing over my password?
Yes. We use Splashtop SOS: we phone you first, you click one link, and you watch everything we do on your own screen. We never need your email password, and your access ends the instant we're finished. Most Working Offline cases are sorted in a few minutes.
Still stuck offline?
We'll connect securely, watch alongside you and flip Outlook back online while you make a cuppa. Call before we connect, access ends the moment we're done.
