Your files have a strange new extension, there's a ransom note on the desktop, and a screen is demanding payment in cryptocurrency. It's frightening — but it is not the end of your data, and paying a criminal is almost never the answer. Ransomware recovery is the work of safely containing the attack, finding clean copies of your data, removing the malware for good, and rebuilding your computers so you can trust them again.
This page is about what happens after an attack. If you're more worried about stopping ransomware before it strikes, our ransomware prevention guide covers that. If you've been hit right now, the single most useful thing you can do is pick up the phone — call 01202 775566 — and leave the rest to us. We're real people in Bournemouth, not a call centre.
// WHAT WE COVER
Ransomware Recovery that just works
Same working-day response
Call us and we start straight away — by remote first if the machine is safe to connect to, on-site across Bournemouth, Poole, Christchurch and Dorset if not. The faster we contain it, the more we save.
Contain before it spreads
Ransomware tries to reach other devices, shared drives and backups. Our first job is to isolate the infected machine and stop it spreading across your home or office network.
Restore from clean backups
Where you have a verified, offline or cloud backup — including Microsoft 365 — we recover your files from a known-good point in time rather than ever paying a ransom.
Remove the malware for good
We don't just unlock the files. We find how it got in, eradicate the malware, and where there's any doubt we wipe and rebuild Windows from scratch so the machine is genuinely clean.
Honest about what's recoverable
We'll tell you plainly what we can and can't get back. Some strains are decryptable, many aren't — recovery usually comes from your backups, and we never over-promise.
A calm, human hand
A specialism of ours is helping retired and disabled clients and small non-technical teams. No jargon, no blame, no pressure — just steady help when you need it most.

Simple, honest, sorted

01
1. Contain & assess
Call us and we act fast. We isolate the infected device from your network so the encryption can't spread, identify the ransomware strain where possible, and check which files, drives and backups are affected. We do NOT pay the ransom and we advise you not to either.
-

2. Recover & rebuild
We restore your data from the cleanest verified backup we can find — local, offline or Microsoft 365 — and remove the malware entirely. Where the machine can't be fully trusted, we wipe and reinstall Windows, then put your files and programs back.

3. Report & protect
We help you report the incident to Action Fraud and, for businesses with a personal-data breach, understand your ICO obligations. Then we close the door it came through with proper backups, security and updates so it can't happen again.

// GOOD QUESTIONS
Frequently asked
I've just been hit by ransomware — what should I do right now?
Stop using the machine, but don't rush to power it off — disconnect it from your network and Wi-Fi instead (unplug the cable, turn Wi-Fi off) so it can't spread, then call us on 01202 775566. Don't delete the ransom note, don't pay anything, and don't reconnect any USB drives or other computers until we've checked them.
Will I get my files back without paying the ransom?
Usually, yes — if you have a sound backup. The reliable route to recovery is restoring from a verified offline or cloud backup, which is why we never recommend paying. A few older ransomware strains have free decryption tools, but most modern ones don't. If you have no backup at all, recovery may be partial or impossible, and we'll tell you honestly where you stand.
Should I pay the ransom to get my data back?
We strongly advise against it, and so do Action Fraud and the NCSC. Paying funds organised crime, marks you as someone who'll pay again, and offers no guarantee the criminals will actually unlock your files — many people pay and still get nothing. We focus on recovering from backups and rebuilding instead.
How long does ransomware recovery take?
It depends on how far the infection spread and the size and state of your backups. A single home PC with a good backup can often be recovered in a day or two; several business machines with shared drives take longer. We always contain it the same working day and give you a realistic timeline once we've assessed the damage.
Do I have to report a ransomware attack?
Anyone can and should report it to Action Fraud (the UK's national fraud and cybercrime reporting centre). If you're a business and personal data has been lost or exposed, you may also have a legal duty to notify the ICO, usually within 72 hours. We'll help you understand your obligations — see our GDPR IT compliance page — but we help you meet them; we don't act as your legal adviser.
