// THE SERIES

What the Latitude 3000 series is — and who it suits

The 3000 series sits at the bottom of Dell’s Latitude business range, below the mainstream 5000 series and the premium 7000 series. It was built for small businesses, schools and admin desks — which is exactly why ex-corporate examples are plentiful and sensibly priced as refurbs.

What it keeps from the business line matters: TPM 2.0 for BitLocker encryption, a wedge lock slot, an optional fingerprint reader built into the power button, a proper flip-down gigabit network port, and — best of all — fully socketed RAM that you can upgrade later. That last one actually beats many 7000-series machines.

The honest trade-offs: HDMI is the older 1.4 standard, there’s no Thunderbolt on any model, the processors are efficiency-focused U-class chips, and the cheapest screen option is dim — more on that below.

Who it suits: budget-conscious businesses, students, charities, reception and admin desks, and anyone wanting their first proper business laptop. If you need Thunderbolt, a brighter screen or a more premium build, the 5000 or 7000 series is the better home for your money.

// THE LINE-UP

The models we sell — and what they typically cost

Every price below is for our standard build: 16GB of RAM, a new 1TB Samsung 990 PRO SSD, Windows 11 Home or Pro, professionally set up, setup and your data moved across — all included. The exact price depends on the machine in stock and its grade — call for today’s price.

  • Latitude 3420 (14-inch, 11th-gen, 2021) — typically from £510. The compact one. Light at around 1.5kg, with the same platform as its bigger sibling.
  • Latitude 3520 (15.6-inch, 11th-gen, 2021) — typically £545. The big-screen all-rounder. Same ports and internals as the 3420 in a roomier body.
  • Latitude 3540 (15.6-inch, 12th/13th-gen, 2023) — typically £605. The newest of the three, with 10-core i5 processors that are a genuinely big step up for multitasking, plus USB-C charging.
  • Latitude 3440 (14-inch, 12th/13th-gen, 2023) — the compact version of the 3540. Stock is less predictable, so we don’t publish a price — ask us what’s in.

Every machine is securely wiped, fully tested and graded A, B or C by looks alone — every grade works exactly the same.

// PROCESSORS

CPU advice: the chips to want and the ones to walk past

The 3000 series was sold with a wide spread of processors, and the difference between the best and worst is enormous. Our honest guidance:

  • We only stock Core i5 and above. These models were also sold elsewhere with Celeron and dual-core i3 chips — fine for a kiosk, miserable for real work (and the 2023 Celeron can’t do BitLocker properly). We simply don’t sell them.
  • The i5-1135G7 is the sweet spot on the 3420 and 3520 — a quad-core chip that handles office work, video calls and everyday multitasking comfortably.
  • The 12th/13th-gen i5s in the 3440 and 3540 (i5-1235U, i5-1335U) are 10-core chips — two performance cores plus eight efficiency cores — and a genuinely big step up over any 11th-gen machine. If you multitask heavily, they’re worth the extra.

// MEMORY

RAM: the best upgrade story in the whole Latitude range

Here’s the 3000 series’ quiet superpower: every model has two SODIMM slots, nothing soldered, and takes up to 64GB of DDR4-3200. That’s more upgradeable than many far more expensive 7000-series machines, where some or all of the memory is fixed to the board forever.

It matters for two reasons. First, your laptop can grow with you — if your needs change in three years, more memory is a ten-minute job rather than a new laptop.

Second, and less obviously: dual-channel memory makes the graphics faster. The Iris Xe graphics in the i5 models needs two sticks of RAM working in tandem to perform properly. Ex-corporate machines usually left the factory with a single 8GB stick — which quietly hobbles the graphics as well as limiting the memory.

That’s why we sell every 3000-series machine with 16GB fitted as two matched 8GB sticks — dual-channel, full-speed graphics, and enough headroom for years of Windows 11, browsers full of tabs and Microsoft 365. Want 32GB or more for heavier work? Tell us when you call and we’ll price it on the day.

// STORAGE

A new Samsung 990 PRO in every machine — with the honest speed caveat

The single biggest weakness of most refurbished laptops is a tired old SSD of unknown history. So we don’t take the chance: every laptop we sell gets a brand-new 1TB Samsung 990 PRO fitted as standard — Samsung’s flagship NVMe drive, with its own 5-year Samsung guarantee on top of ours.

Now the honesty bit. The 990 PRO is a PCIe Gen4 drive, but the 3420 and 3520 run it at Gen3 speed in practice — around 3.5 GB/s. That’s still a huge real-world upgrade over the worn drives these machines arrive with, and the reason we fit the PRO anyway is its endurance and that 5-year Samsung guarantee, not the headline speed figure. The 3440 and 3540 have proper Gen4 slots, so the same drive runs at full speed there.

Need more room? Upgrade at the time of purchase:

  • 1TB Samsung 990 PRO — included as standard
  • 2TB — add £185
  • 4TB — add £420

One nice quirk: the 3420 and 3520 also have an optional second 2.5-inch drive bay (mutually exclusive with the larger battery option), so some units can take a second drive for backups — ask when you call.

// SCREENS

Screens: the one spec that makes or breaks a budget Latitude

This is the biggest single quality difference between one 3000-series machine and another, and it’s the thing bargain listings gloss over.

The base screen option on every model is an HD (1366×768) TN panel rated at just 220 nits — dim, low-resolution and washed-out when viewed at an angle. It was chosen to hit corporate price points, it’s common in ex-corporate stock, and it feels genuinely poor in 2026. We think you deserve to know that before you buy, not after.

The Full HD (1920×1080) panels are a different experience entirely — sharper, brighter at 250–300 nits, and with far better viewing angles. Some configurations even came with touchscreens.

Our policy: we grade and price Full HD units above HD ones, and we’ll always tell you which panel a machine has before you commit. If your budget only stretches to an HD unit we’ll say so plainly and let you decide with eyes open.

One honest footnote for creative buyers: the 3540’s panels are 6-bit, so this isn’t the series for colour-accurate photo or design work. All panels across the range are anti-glare and 60Hz — good news for office lighting.

// STRAIGHT ANSWER

Why do computers cost more than last year?

In short: the memory chips inside every computer have shot up in price. AI data centres are buying storage and memory at a scale the industry has never seen, and that demand has pushed up the price of the NAND flash chips inside every SSD — for everyone, on every brand, new and refurbished alike.

We fit a brand-new 1TB Samsung 990 PRO in every machine we sell rather than a tired old drive — and that one part now costs around £230 at UK retailers. We’d rather explain the price honestly than quietly fit a cheaper, slower drive.

The upside: a refurbished business-grade Dell is the best answer to rising prices — the chassis, screen and board are already made, so your money goes on the parts that matter. The full story is on our why computer prices have gone up page.

// SETUP · GUARANTEE · SUPPORT

Every machine set up properly — then choose your cover

Every computer is professionally set up by 365 Techies with Windows 11 Home or Pro (your choice) and your data moved across — that’s included. Then pick how looked-after you want to be:

Our honest advice: the support plan is the best value of the three — and not because we sell it. The guarantee alone is five times longer, problems get caught at the six-weekly service before they cost you a morning, your backups are actually checked rather than assumed, and one avoided emergency pays for months of cover. Plans are rolling monthly with no lock-in — see home plans and business plans, or add Microsoft 365 to a home plan at £4.85 per user, per month.

Every model in detail

Every machine comes with 16GB fitted. Want 32GB? Guide upgrade: +£176 on laptops and Micro desktops, +£210 on SFF/Tower desktops (2×16GB, fitted). One honest heads-up: memory prices are moving unusually fast right now (the same AI data-centre demand behind rising computer prices), so we confirm RAM upgrade pricing at quote time. Note the Latitude 7000 series has soldered memory — it can’t be upgraded later, so pick the size you’ll ever need up front.

// GOOD QUESTIONS

Frequently asked

What’s the difference between the Latitude 3000, 5000 and 7000 series?

The 3000 is the budget tier, the 5000 the mainstream workhorse and the 7000 the premium ultrabook. The 3000 keeps the business essentials — TPM 2.0, lock slot, wired network port — but has a dimmer base screen option, HDMI 1.4 and no Thunderbolt. Our series explainer walks through it in plain English.

Which processor should I choose?

On the 2021 models (3420/3520) the i5-1135G7 is the sweet spot. On the 2023 models (3440/3540) the 12th/13th-gen i5s are 10-core chips and a big step up. We only sell Core i5 and above — the Celeron and i3 configs these models carry elsewhere are best avoided. We’ll tell you exactly which chip is in any machine we offer you.

Why do you avoid Celeron models?

Two reasons. They’re kiosk-grade slow — fine for a till display, frustrating for real work. And on the 2023 models, the Celeron 7305 lacks discrete TPM 2.0 support, which means no proper BitLocker encryption — a dealbreaker for business use. We simply don’t sell them.

Does the Samsung 990 PRO run at full speed in these laptops?

On the 3440 and 3540, yes — full Gen4 speed. On the 3420 and 3520 the slot runs the drive at Gen3 in practice (around 3.5 GB/s), which is still a huge real-world upgrade. We fit the 990 PRO for its endurance and 5-year Samsung guarantee, and we’ll always be straight with you about which speed your machine delivers.

Can the RAM be upgraded later?

Yes — and better than on most laptops. Every 3000-series model has two SODIMM slots with nothing soldered, taking up to 64GB. We fit 16GB as two matched sticks as standard, which also enables the dual-channel mode the Iris Xe graphics needs to perform properly.

Which screen should I look for?

Full HD, every time. The base HD panel is a dim 220-nit TN screen that feels poor in 2026. We grade and price Full HD units above HD ones, and we’ll always tell you which panel a machine has before you buy.

Is setup included, or is that extra?

Included, always. We set the laptop up with Windows 11 Home or Pro, professionally set up, move your files and data across from your old machine, and hand it over ready to use. There’s no setup fee hiding at the till. Delivery is available UK-wide, or we’ll bring it to you locally and set it up.

What guarantee do I get?

Our own 5-year 365 Techies guarantee on the laptop, plus Samsung’s separate 5-year guarantee on the new 990 PRO SSD inside it. We’re a family-run firm that’s sold Dell since 2001 and been going since 1995 — we’re not going anywhere, and we’re rated 4.9 on Google. Questions? Call 01202 775566 or get in touch.

Why are refurbished laptops more expensive than they used to be?

Because the memory chips inside every computer have risen sharply in price — AI data centres are buying storage and memory at unprecedented scale, which has pushed up the cost of the SSDs we fit. The brand-new 1TB Samsung 990 PRO in every machine now costs around £230 on its own. Refurbished business-grade Dell remains the best-value response: the full story is on our why computer prices have gone up page.
