Refurbished Dell Latitude 5000 series — the sweet spot for most buyers

The Latitude 5000 is Dell’s mainstream business workhorse — tougher and better connected than the budget 3000 series, far easier to upgrade than the slim 7000s. Every machine we sell leaves Kinson with 16GB of dual-channel RAM, a brand-new 1TB Samsung 990 PRO SSD, a Windows 11 Home or Pro, professionally set up install and our 5-year guarantee — with setup and your data moved across included in the price.

// WHY · THE · 5000

Why the 5000 series is the one we recommend most

Dell builds three tiers of Latitude. The 3000 is the budget line, the 7000 is the slim premium line, and the 5000 sits in the middle — it’s the volume seller that most businesses actually buy, which makes it the classic refurbishment platform: plentiful, well built and genuinely easy to service.

Compared with the 3000 series you get two Thunderbolt 4 ports (on the 11th- and 12th-gen configurations — more on the odd exception below), Dell ControlVault 3 hardware security, better screen options up to a 400-nit 100% sRGB panel, HDMI 2.0 and full dual-slot RAM. Compared with the 7000 series it’s a little heavier and plainer — but every part we care about is user-serviceable, which is exactly what you want in a machine you plan to keep for years.

Who is it for? Office workers, home workers, students and small businesses who want a durable, properly connected laptop — Ethernet, Thunderbolt docking, real security hardware — at a fraction of the new price. The 14-inch models (5420/5430, from about 1.36kg) suit people who carry their laptop; the 15.6-inch models (5520/5530, about 1.59kg) suit desk users who want the bigger screen and a full number pad.

The line-up and our typical prices

Four models make up the heart of our 5000-series stock. Every price below is all-in: 16GB dual-channel RAM, a new 1TB Samsung 990 PRO, Windows 11 Home or Pro, professionally set up, setup and your data moved across, and our 5-year guarantee (with a support plan). The exact price depends on the machine in stock and its grade — call for today’s price.

  • Latitude 5520 — 15.6″, 11th-gen Intel — typically £535. The best-value big-screen machine, with a number pad.
  • Latitude 5420 — 14″, 11th-gen Intel — typically £540. Same platform in the portable chassis.
  • Latitude 5430 — 14″, 12th-gen Intel — typically £555. The step-up: 10-core CPU and full-speed Gen4 storage.
  • Latitude 5530 — 15.6″, 12th-gen Intel — typically £605. The 12th-gen platform with the big screen.

The newer 5440 and 5540 (13th-gen, 2023) appear on the refurb market too and we can source them to order, but stock is thinner and prices move — ask us for what’s on the bench this week. Every machine is securely wiped, fully tested, and graded A, B or C on looks alone — every grade works identically.

11th gen or 12th gen? Honest CPU advice

For everyday office work — email, Microsoft 365, browsing, video calls — the 11th-gen i5 (i5-1135G7 or i5-1145G7) in the 5420 and 5520 is comfortably enough. It’s the classic refurb baseline for a reason, and it’s where the best value sits.

If you multitask heavily — big spreadsheets, lots of browser tabs, photo work — the 12th-gen i5 in the 5430 and 5530 is a genuinely big jump. The i5-1235U and i5-1245U are 10-core chips (2 performance + 8 efficiency cores), and the difference under load is real, not marketing. For £15–£70 more it’s the step-up we’d point most power users at.

One thing an honest dealer should tell you: a small number of early 5420 and 5520 units were built with 10th-gen CPUs (such as the i5-10210U). They’re fine machines, but they’re a step behind — and Thunderbolt 4 isn’t a given on those configurations. We check the actual CPU in every unit, not just the model number on the lid, so what we quote is what you get. If you buy a 5000-series Latitude elsewhere, check the processor line in the spec — not just ‘Latitude 5420’.

// MEMORY

RAM: two slots on every model, and why dual-channel matters

Every model on this page has two SODIMM memory slots, nothing soldered, with a maximum of 64GB (2×32GB). The 5420, 5520, 5430 and 5530 all use DDR4-3200, so upgrades are cheap and simple for the life of the machine.

Here’s the detail most sellers skip: typical ex-fleet machines arrive with a single 8GB stick. Running one stick means single-channel memory — and on these Intel chips the built-in Iris Xe graphics lose real performance in single-channel. That’s why we fit 16GB as a matched dual-channel pair (2×8GB) as standard, not because 16GB looks good on a spec sheet, but because the machine is measurably quicker that way.

One expert footnote if you’re looking at the newer 5440 or 5540: the memory type depends on the processor. U-series CPU boards take DDR4-3200; P-series boards take DDR5 — and the two are physically incompatible. It’s an easy trap to fall into when buying RAM online, and another reason we verify the exact board in every unit before quoting an upgrade. Need more than 16GB? We’ll fit 32GB or 64GB at the time of purchase — just ask when you call.

// STORAGE

A new Samsung 990 PRO in every machine — with the honest speed caveat

We don’t reuse the old drive. Every Latitude we sell gets a brand-new 1TB Samsung 990 PRO fitted as standard — Samsung’s flagship NVMe SSD, with its own 5-year Samsung guarantee on top of ours. Need more space? Upgrade to 2TB for +£185, or 4TB for +£420.

Now the honesty bit, because the models differ:

  • 5430 and 5530: the M.2 slot we fit (slot 1 on the 5530) runs the 990 PRO at full PCIe Gen4 speed — this is as fast as these laptops get.
  • 5420 and 5520: the slot runs at PCIe Gen3, so the drive caps at roughly 3.5 GB/s. That’s still a huge real-world upgrade over the tired drives these machines arrive with — and the 990 PRO’s endurance and 5-year guarantee are the real reason we fit it, not the headline speed.

Some sellers will happily advertise ‘Gen4 SSD’ on a Gen3 machine. We won’t. You get the same excellent drive either way — we just tell you what speed it will actually run at.

// BUILD · AND · PORTS

Ports, screens and security — what you actually get

The port line-up is remarkably consistent across the range: two Thunderbolt 4 ports (USB-C with DisplayPort, USB4 and Power Delivery — charge and dock through either), two USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 (one with PowerShare), HDMI 2.0, gigabit RJ-45 Ethernet, a universal audio jack, a microSD slot and a wedge lock slot. Wi-Fi 6/6E throughout, with optional smart-card readers and 4G WWAN on some units. The Thunderbolt 4 caveat: it applies to the 11th- and 12th-gen configurations — on the rare 10th-gen 5420/5520 configs it isn’t a given, so we confirm it per unit.

Screens: the common refurb panels are FHD (1920×1080) at 250 or 300 nits, with a lovely 400-nit 100% sRGB option on some units. A few base units came with a poor HD TN panel — we flag those clearly as entry-level rather than hiding it in the small print.

Security is proper business-grade: discrete TPM 2.0 and Dell ControlVault 3 hardware authentication, with optional fingerprint readers in the power button and IR cameras for Windows Hello on some units. Batteries are user-replaceable and every model charges over USB-C.

// STRAIGHT ANSWER

Why do computers cost more than last year?

In short: the memory chips inside every computer have shot up in price. AI data centres are buying storage and memory at a scale the industry has never seen, and that demand has pushed up the price of the NAND flash chips inside every SSD — for everyone, on every brand, new and refurbished alike.

We fit a brand-new 1TB Samsung 990 PRO in every machine we sell rather than a tired old drive — and that one part now costs around £230 at UK retailers. We’d rather explain the price honestly than quietly fit a cheaper, slower drive.

The upside: a refurbished business-grade Dell is the best answer to rising prices — the chassis, screen and board are already made, so your money goes on the parts that matter. The full story is on our why computer prices have gone up page.

// SETUP · GUARANTEE · SUPPORT

Every machine set up properly — then choose your cover

Every computer is professionally set up by 365 Techies with Windows 11 Home or Pro (your choice) and your data moved across — that’s included. Then pick how looked-after you want to be:

Our honest advice: the support plan is the best value of the three — and not because we sell it. The guarantee alone is five times longer, problems get caught at the six-weekly service before they cost you a morning, your backups are actually checked rather than assumed, and one avoided emergency pays for months of cover. Plans are rolling monthly with no lock-in — see home plans and business plans, or add Microsoft 365 to a home plan at £4.85 per user, per month.

Every model in detail

Every machine comes with 16GB fitted. Want 32GB? Guide upgrade: +£176 on laptops and Micro desktops, +£210 on SFF/Tower desktops (2×16GB, fitted). One honest heads-up: memory prices are moving unusually fast right now (the same AI data-centre demand behind rising computer prices), so we confirm RAM upgrade pricing at quote time. Note the Latitude 7000 series has soldered memory — it can’t be upgraded later, so pick the size you’ll ever need up front.

// GOOD QUESTIONS

Frequently asked

What exactly is included in the price?

Everything: the laptop with 16GB dual-channel RAM, a brand-new 1TB Samsung 990 PRO SSD, a Windows 11 Home or Pro, professionally set up installation, full setup, your data and files moved across from your old machine, and our 5-year guarantee (with a support plan). There are no hidden extras — the price we quote is the price you pay.

Which model should I buy?

For everyday office work at the best price, the 5520 (15.6″) or 5420 (14″) with 11th-gen Intel. For heavy multitasking, the 5430 or 5530 with the 10-core 12th-gen i5 is a genuinely big step up. Pick 14″ if you carry the laptop, 15.6″ if it lives on a desk and you want the number pad. Not sure? Talk to a Techie and we’ll match you to a machine.

Is the 11th-gen i5 still fast enough in 2026?

Yes — for email, Microsoft 365, browsing and video calls the i5-1135G7/1145G7 is comfortably capable, especially with the 16GB dual-channel RAM and new Samsung SSD we fit. If your work involves big spreadsheets, lots of tabs or photo editing, spend the extra on the 12th-gen 5430 or 5530: those i5s have 10 cores (2 performance + 8 efficiency) and the difference under load is real.

Will the Samsung 990 PRO run at full speed?

On the 5430 and 5530 (slot 1), yes — full PCIe Gen4 speed. On the 5420 and 5520 the slot is PCIe Gen3, so the drive caps at roughly 3.5 GB/s. That’s still a huge real-world upgrade, and the 990 PRO’s endurance and 5-year Samsung guarantee are the reason we fit it in every machine regardless. We’ll never advertise Gen4 speeds on a Gen3 machine.

Can I upgrade the RAM later?

Yes. Every model here has two SODIMM slots, nothing soldered, up to 64GB. The 5420/5520/5430/5530 all use DDR4-3200. One caution on the newer 5440/5540: U-series boards take DDR4 and P-series boards take DDR5, and they’re physically incompatible — check (or ask us to check) before buying memory for those.

What about the newer 5440 and 5540?

The 13th-gen 5440 (14″) and 5540 (15.6″) can be sourced to order, but stock is thinner and pricing moves, so we quote them individually — ask us what’s available. One technical note: the 5440 takes only the shorter M.2 2230 drive size, so it gets a quality Gen4 2230 SSD rather than the 2280-size 990 PRO.

What do grades A, B and C mean?

Grades describe looks only — Grade A is close to pristine, Grade B has light wear, Grade C shows honest marks from its working life. Every grade is securely wiped, fully tested and fully working, and every grade carries the same new Samsung SSD, the same setup service and the same 5-year guarantee. A Grade C machine is simply the same laptop at a better price.

Do you deliver, and can I see machines in person?

Both. We deliver UK-wide, and we’ll bring a machine to your home or business to try, or meet you at the Kinson Community Centre, Bournemouth BH10 7LH, by appointment. We’ve sold Dell since 2001 and we’re a family firm going back to 1995 — rated 4.9 on Google. Call 01202 775566 or text 07520 615332 for today’s stock and prices.

Why are refurbished laptops more expensive than they used to be?

Because the memory chips inside every computer have risen sharply in price — AI data centres are buying storage and memory at unprecedented scale, which has pushed up the cost of the SSDs we fit. The brand-new 1TB Samsung 990 PRO in every machine now costs around £230 on its own. Refurbished business-grade Dell remains the best-value response: the full story is on our why computer prices have gone up page.
