Refurbished Dell OptiPlex 3000 tier — the sensible office desktop

The OptiPlex 3080, 3090 and 3000 are Dell’s entry business desktops, bought by the pallet-load for offices and schools — which is exactly why clean ex-fleet stock is plentiful and superb value. Every machine is professionally set up by 365 Techies with Windows 11 Home or Pro (your choice), your data moved across, and fitted with a brand-new 1TB Samsung 990 PRO SSD — all included in the price, from £545.

// THE TIER

What the 3000 tier is — and who it’s for

Dell sells OptiPlex desktops in three tiers. The 3000 tier is the entry business line — below the mainstream 5000 and the premium 7000 — and it’s the one corporate and education fleets bought in the biggest volumes. Three or four years on, those fleets are being refreshed, so tidy ex-lease units are everywhere and prices are very keen indeed.

The cost-cutting versus the higher tiers is real but sensible: a Realtek rather than Intel network chip, fewer USB ports, no USB-C or Thunderbolt, one M.2 SSD slot, and a Core i5 ceiling on the larger cases. None of that matters for what these machines are actually for: office work, email, web, accounts and video calls, all day, for years.

They suit budget-conscious small businesses, schools, charities and home users who want a reliable branded desktop without paying for headroom they’ll never use. They are not gaming or CAD machines — if that’s you, look at our 7000-tier page instead. Every unit we sell is securely wiped, fully tested and graded A/B/C by looks alone, and we only stock Core i5 and above.

// THE LINE-UP

3080, 3090 and 3000 — three years, two generations

The tier covers three model years, and the names need a moment of honesty:

  • OptiPlex 3080 (2020) — Intel 10th-gen. The bargain workhorse of the range. From £545 with Core i5, 16GB and our new-SSD-and-setup package.
  • OptiPlex 3090 (2021) — despite the “90”, this is still Intel 10th-gen, not 11th. It’s essentially a re-platformed 3080 with the same processor ceiling, and we price it accordingly at £550. Some sellers market it as a generation newer; we won’t.
  • OptiPlex 3000 (2022) — the genuine step up: Intel 12th-gen, faster DDR4-3200 memory and Gen4 NVMe storage. £655.

All three meet Windows 11’s processor requirement — a genuine advantage over the 7th-gen and older fleet stock (2017 and earlier) still flooding the market. One trap to know: the “OptiPlex 3000 Thin Client” is a completely different Celeron-based product. We don’t sell it, and its bargain prices shouldn’t be compared with the real desktop. The table below shows the three side by side.

// CPU TRUTH

The honest processor picture: i5 rules this tier

Here’s something many listings get wrong, so let’s be plain. Across all three generations, the SFF and Tower versions are Core i5 only — Dell never made an i7 or i9 3080, 3090 or 3000 in those cases. The best chips fitted were the i5-10600 (3080/3090) and i5-12600 (3000), all 6-core/12-thread and thoroughly capable office processors. If you see an “i7 OptiPlex 3080 Tower” advertised elsewhere, treat it with suspicion.

The only i7s in the entire tier are low-power 35W T-series chips in the tiny Micro: the i7-10700T (8-core, 3080/3090 Micro) and the i7-12700T (12-core, 3000 Micro) — the latter being the most powerful processor ever offered in this tier. Both are genuinely scarce as refurbs, so we price them on inspection when stock lands. There is no i9 anywhere in the 3000 tier, full stop.

Our advice: the 12th-gen i5s comfortably outperform the 10th-gen chips, so for Windows 11 longevity the 2022 OptiPlex 3000 is the smart buy. The 3080 and 3090 are the bargains when the budget leads.

// FORM FACTORS

Micro, SFF or Tower — pick the case for the job

Each generation came in three cases, and the right one depends on where it’s going:

  • Micro (roughly 18 × 18 × 3.6cm) — near-silent, and it VESA-mounts behind a monitor to vanish from the desk entirely. One M.2 slot plus one 2.5-inch drive bay, no expansion slots. Ideal for reception desks, tills and tidy home offices — and it’s the only case in this tier where an i7 exists at all.
  • SFF (Small Form Factor) — the sweet spot for most business buyers. Adds a 3.5/2.5-inch drive bay, a slim optical drive and one half-height PCIe x16 slot for a basic graphics card or extra ports.
  • Tower — choose this for a 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch drive together (two or three SATA bays depending on year), full-height cards and the easiest DIY upgrades.

One buying note: the low-profile graphics cards Dell offered for the SFF are multi-monitor cards, not gaming cards — the modest power supplies leave no headroom for anything bigger. If you’re torn between cases, our Micro vs SFF vs Tower guide goes deeper.

// MEMORY

RAM: two slots, 64GB ceiling, one cheap win

Every variant in the tier has two memory slots and a 64GB maximum of non-ECC DDR4 — plenty of headroom for an office machine. Two details matter when upgrading:

  • The Micro takes laptop-style SODIMM sticks; the SFF and Tower take full-size UDIMMs. They are not interchangeable, so don’t buy upgrade memory until you know which case you have.
  • The 3080 and 3090 run memory at DDR4-2666 regardless of what the stick is rated for, while the 2022 OptiPlex 3000 runs faster DDR4-3200 — another small point in the 12th-gen machine’s favour.

Here’s the cheap win: ex-fleet units commonly left the leasing company with a single 8GB stick, which leaves the memory running in single-channel mode and quietly holds back the built-in graphics. Fitting a matched pair for dual-channel is an inexpensive improvement that Dell’s own manuals recommend. Our standard spec is 16GB, fitted properly, so you don’t have to think about any of this — but if you need 32GB or more for heavier multitasking, just say so when you order and we’ll build it in.

// STORAGE

Storage: a new 1TB Samsung 990 PRO in every machine

Every model and case in the tier has one M.2 slot taking 2230 or 2280 SSDs, and typical ex-fleet stock arrives with a tired 256GB drive. We don’t sell them like that. Every machine we prepare is fitted with a brand-new 1TB Samsung 990 PRO — a top-tier drive, included in the price, with your data moved across onto it.

The honest speed picture: the 3080 and 3090 have PCIe Gen3 slots, so the 990 PRO runs at Gen3 speed there — around 3.5GB/s, which is still several times faster than the drives these machines shipped with. The 2022 OptiPlex 3000 shipped with Gen4 factory drives, so it lets the 990 PRO stretch further. Either way you get a new, fast, reliable drive rather than a five-year-old ex-lease one.

Need more space later? The Tower has two or three SATA bays (two on the 3080, three on the 3090/3000), the SFF one bay plus a slim optical, and even the tiny Micro takes one 2.5-inch drive alongside the M.2. Tell us up front and we’ll fit extra storage before delivery.

// STRAIGHT ANSWER

Why do computers cost more than last year?

In short: the memory chips inside every computer have shot up in price. AI data centres are buying storage and memory at a scale the industry has never seen, and that demand has pushed up the price of the NAND flash chips inside every SSD — for everyone, on every brand, new and refurbished alike.

We fit a brand-new 1TB Samsung 990 PRO in every machine we sell rather than a tired old drive — and that one part now costs around £230 at UK retailers. We’d rather explain the price honestly than quietly fit a cheaper, slower drive.

The upside: a refurbished business-grade Dell is the best answer to rising prices — the chassis, screen and board are already made, so your money goes on the parts that matter. The full story is on our why computer prices have gone up page.

Our honest advice: the support plan is the best value of the three — and not because we sell it. The guarantee alone is five times longer, problems get caught at the six-weekly service before they cost you a morning, your backups are actually checked rather than assumed, and one avoided emergency pays for months of cover. Plans are rolling monthly with no lock-in — see home plans and business plans, or add Microsoft 365 to a home plan at £4.85 per user, per month.

// GOOD QUESTIONS

Frequently asked

Is the OptiPlex 3090 newer than the 3080?

Only by a year of manufacture — and here’s the catch: despite the “90” in the name, the 3090 uses the same Intel 10th-generation processors as the 3080, not 11th-gen. It’s essentially a re-platformed 3080, which is why we price the two within £5 of each other. Some sellers market it as a generation newer; we’d rather you knew the truth and paid accordingly.

Can I get an i7 or i9 OptiPlex 3080, 3090 or 3000?

In the SFF and Tower cases: no — Dell only ever fitted Core i5 processors there, so any listing claiming otherwise is wrong. The only i7s in the tier are low-power T-series chips in the Micro (i7-10700T and i7-12700T), which are scarce as refurbs and priced on inspection when we have them. No i9 was ever offered anywhere in the 3000 tier. If you need i7-class power in a bigger case, look at our OptiPlex 5000 and 7000 tier pages.

Will these desktops run Windows 11 properly?

Yes — all three generations (10th-gen 3080/3090 and 12th-gen 3000) meet Windows 11’s processor requirement, which is a genuine advantage over the older 7th-gen (2017 and earlier) fleet stock still on the market. Every machine leaves us professionally set up with Windows 11 Home or Pro, your choice, at no extra cost. For the longest runway, the 12th-gen OptiPlex 3000 is the smart buy.

What exactly is included in the price?

Every machine is professionally set up by 365 Techies with Windows 11 Home or Pro (your choice), your data is moved across from your old computer, and it’s fitted with a brand-new 1TB Samsung 990 PRO SSD — all included in the price. Every unit is securely wiped, fully tested and graded A/B/C by cosmetic condition only. UK-wide delivery, no call-out fee.

What guarantee do I get?

A 12-month return-to-base guarantee comes as standard. Or, if you’re on a 365 support plan (home £18.25/month per computer, business from £24.38/month), the guarantee extends to 5 years for as long as you stay on the plan. There’s also an optional £49 Setup Pack — tailored home or business setup, 30 days of remote support, and a full service after your first 30 days. The comparison table on this page shows how the pack and plans stack up.

Which case should I choose — Micro, SFF or Tower?

Micro if you want silence and a clear desk — it VESA-mounts behind the monitor and suits receptions, tills and home offices. SFF is the default office box, with room for one extra drive and a half-height expansion card. Tower if you want multiple hard drives or the easiest future upgrades. Note the Micro takes laptop-style SODIMM memory while the SFF and Tower take full-size sticks, so upgrade parts differ.

Can I add more storage or memory later?

Yes. All variants have two memory slots with a 64GB maximum, and beyond the M.2 slot there’s a 2.5-inch bay even in the Micro, one bay in the SFF, and two or three SATA bays in the Tower. The cheapest worthwhile upgrade is a matched pair of memory sticks for dual-channel mode, which helps the built-in graphics — our standard 16GB spec is already fitted that way. Tell us what you need and we’ll build it in before delivery.

Can these drive a 4K monitor?

Yes, via DisplayPort, which all three support. One quirk worth knowing on the 2022 OptiPlex 3000: its HDMI port is HDMI 1.4b, capped at 1920×1200 at 60Hz — so for a 4K screen, use the DisplayPort output. If you need three or more monitors, the SFF can take a low-profile multi-monitor graphics card; just mention it when you order.

Want a dependable desk box that just works?

Tell us what the computer’s for and we’ll match you to the right OptiPlex — honestly, including when the answer is “buy the cheaper one”. Family-run since 1995, Dell reseller since 2001, 4.9 on Google.
