/01 — THE PROBLEM
One speed test can't see your whole house
"The WiFi's fine in the lounge but hopeless in the back bedroom" — that's the sentence we hear most, and a single speed test can't explain it. One test measures one spot at one moment, usually with you standing near the router where things were never bad. It says nothing about the kitchen behind the chimney breast or the office in the loft conversion.
A room-by-room WiFi test is different: same device, same test, every room, a few minutes apart. Done properly, it turns "the internet's rubbish" into a map — three rooms brilliant, two fine, one genuinely poor — and that map tells you whether the fix is free (move the router), cheap (shift where you sit) or worth real money (a proper mesh system).

/02 — THE METHOD
How to run a survey that means something
The difference between a useful survey and a misleading one is discipline, and there are only four rules:
- Get a baseline first. If you can, run one test on a computer wired into the router with an Ethernet cable — that's what your broadband can actually do. No cable? Test on WiFi standing right next to the router instead. Every room gets judged against this ceiling, not against whatever speed the adverts promised.
- Same device, every room. Phones, laptops and tablets have different WiFi radios; mixing them ruins the comparison.
- Same few minutes. Broadband speed drifts through the day, so a survey spread across an afternoon compares apples with oranges. Walk the whole house in one 10–15 minute pass.
- Stand where you actually use it. Test from the desk chair, the sofa, the pillow end of the bed — not the doorway, which is often several steps closer to the router than you ever sit.

A caveat on the wired baseline: use a gigabit-capable cable and port. An old cable or a laptop with a 100 Mbps port caps a wired test at about 94 Mbps — on full fibre that makes the whole survey look wrong. If a wired test on a fast package sits suspiciously close to 94, suspect the cable before the broadband.
/03 — READING THE RESULTS
What the numbers mean, room by room
Three numbers tell the story in each room, and raw speed is the least interesting of them:
- Download is how fast things arrive. Streaming and big downloads care about this most.
- Latency is the round-trip delay. Video calls and gaming feel this long before they feel a slow download.
- Jitter is how much that delay wobbles. It's the number behind frozen faces and robot voices on calls.
This is why the video-call bar matters more than the headline speed. A modern video call needs surprisingly little bandwidth — a few steady Mbps is generally enough for HD, though the exact figure varies by app — but it needs latency that stays put. A bedroom showing 40 Mbps with wildly swinging jitter will drop more calls than a box room showing 10 Mbps rock-steady.
One honest note about signal bars: no website can read your actual radio signal strength (the dBm figure) or your network's name — browsers simply aren't allowed to see them, and any page claiming otherwise is guessing. So instead of pretending to read the radio, our tool measures what you actually experience — real download, real latency, real jitter, live — and turns them into a plain-English star rating for each room.

Why the back bedroom is always the worst room
UK housing is unusually hostile to WiFi, and your survey will usually show it. Solid brick and stone internal walls — normal in anything pre-war — soak up far more signal than the timber-and-plasterboard construction much WiFi kit is designed around. Chimney breasts are effectively signal walls. Modern extensions and loft conversions often use foil-backed insulation boards, which are lovely for warmth and terrible for WiFi. Add the classic layout problem — the master socket, and therefore the router, sits by the front door while the office is at the back — and a two-star back bedroom is the predictable result, not a faulty router.
Your room map tells you which cure fits. One poor room next to good ones can often be fixed by moving the router or simply shifting where you sit. /05 — HONEST ADVICE
When it's not worth fighting it — and what we'd do
Sometimes the survey's most valuable answer is "stop — don't spend anything." Three results should put your wallet away:
- The wired baseline itself is poor. If the connection is slow with a cable plugged straight into the router, no WiFi equipment on earth will fix it — the problem is the broadband coming into the house, and that's a conversation with your provider about the line or the package.
- Every room scores close to the baseline. Your WiFi is already doing its job. If things still feel slow, the fault lies elsewhere — start with our WiFi troubleshooting guide before buying anything.
- One bad room, everything else fine. Try the free fixes first: get the router up off the floor, out of the cupboard and away from the TV, then re-run the survey. A surprising number of "we need mesh" houses don't.

Why is my WiFi good in one room and bad in another?
Because WiFi is radio, and every wall, floor and chimney breast between your router and that room soaks up part of the signal. UK homes are particularly tough: solid brick or stone internal walls absorb far more than plasterboard, and foil-backed insulation in extensions and loft conversions can block signal almost entirely. Distance matters too, and the faster 5 GHz band travels through walls worse than the older 2.4 GHz band. A room-by-room test shows you exactly how much each room loses compared with standing next to the router — which is what tells you whether the fix is free or needs kit.
How do I test my WiFi signal in every room of my house?
Run the same test, on the same device, in every room, within the same ten to fifteen minutes — and take a baseline first, wired into the router if possible, so each room has something fair to be compared against. What speed do I need for video calls like Zoom or Teams?
Less than most people think — a few steady Mbps is generally enough for an HD call, though the exact requirement varies by app and settings. What kills video calls usually isn't speed but stability: latency (the delay) and jitter (how much that delay wobbles). A room with modest download but rock-steady latency will hold a call better than a fast room with spiky jitter. That's why our test measures all three in every room and rates each room specifically for video calls, rather than just showing a headline speed.
Can a website really measure my WiFi signal strength?
Not in the radio sense — no website can read your actual signal strength in dBm or see your network's name, because browsers deliberately block access to that information. Any web page showing you "signal bars" is guessing. What a browser can measure honestly is your real connection quality: actual download speed, latency and jitter, sampled live as you move around the house. That's what our tool does — it tells you how each room genuinely performs rather than pretending to read the radio. For a true dBm survey you need an app installed on the device, or an engineer's kit.
Do I need a mesh WiFi system if one room has bad WiFi?
Usually not for a single room — try the free fixes first. Moving the router up off the floor, out of the cupboard and away from the TV often rescues one weak room, and re-running the survey afterwards takes two minutes.
