// THE GOLDEN RULES
Four habits that keep you safe
Your bank will never ask you to move money
No genuine bank, or the police, will ever ask you to move money to a ‘safe account’ or read out a full passcode. That’s always a scam. This is the big one to remember.
Always go to the bank yourself
Open your banking app, or type the bank’s address in yourself. Never log in through a link in a text or email.
Use your own connection
Bank on your home Wi-Fi or mobile data — not public Wi-Fi in a café or library.
Lock your devices
A PIN, fingerprint or face unlock on your phone and computer keeps your banking private if they’re lost.
Getting set up safely
- Download your bank’s official app from the official app store (or type the bank’s web address yourself).
- Use a strong, unique password that’s different from your email — try our password checker.
- Turn on the bank’s app login with your fingerprint or face, and any two-step verification — see our 2FA guide.
Spotting a banking scam
Be on guard if you get an unexpected call, text or email that:
- creates panic or urgency (‘your account is at risk, act now’);
- asks you to move money, share a passcode, or install software;
- contains a link to ‘log in’ or ‘verify’ your details.
See our pages on scam texts & calls and try the Spot the Scam quiz.
If something feels wrong
Stop. Hang up or close the message. Then contact your bank yourself using 159 or the number on the back of your card. Forward scam texts to 7726 and report fraud to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040. If money has gone, follow our guide on what to do if you’ve been scammed.

// GOOD QUESTIONS
Frequently asked
Is online banking actually safe?
Yes — banks invest heavily in security, and following a few simple habits makes it very safe. The biggest risk isn’t the bank being hacked; it’s being tricked into handing details over, which the golden rules above prevent.
Will my bank ever phone and ask me to move money?
Never. No genuine bank or police officer will ask you to move money to a ‘safe account’ or read out a full code. If someone does, it’s a scam — hang up and call 159.
Is it safe to bank on my phone?
Yes — the official banking app is one of the safest ways to bank, as long as your phone has a screen lock and you keep it updated.
Can you help me get set up?
Of course — we’ll help you install your banking app safely and set up secure login, patiently and at your pace. Just get in touch.
