// DON'T PANIC

First things first — a downed server is usually recoverable

When a server goes down, the whole office can grind to a halt — no shared files, no line-of-business app, sometimes no email. It feels like an emergency because it is one, but the worst thing you can do is start pulling at things in a panic. A calm, methodical first response protects your data and helps us get you working again faster.

The single most important rule: stop repeatedly forcing the server off and on. Yanking the power or holding the button down again and again can turn a small, recoverable fault into real disk or RAID damage — and that's the difference between being back up by this afternoon and losing data. A few careful checks, a phone call, and let us take it from there.

We're Windows and network specialists based on your doorstep, and we've been getting Dorset businesses out of exactly this situation since 1995. If in doubt, don't guess — call us on 01202 775566 and we'll talk you through it.

// WHAT TO DO NOW

The safe first-response checklist while you wait for us

Work through these calmly. They take a couple of minutes and give us a huge head start when you call:

  1. Don't keep force-rebooting. One clean restart may be worth trying, but repeatedly cutting the power can worsen disk or RAID damage. If it didn't come back the first time, stop and call.
  2. Check the power. Confirm the server (and its UPS, if you have one) is switched on and getting power — check the plug, socket and any battery-backup unit that may have tripped.
  3. Check the network and switch. Look at the network switch and router — are their lights on and normal? A dead switch or a knocked-out cable can look exactly like a dead server.
  4. Work out if it's the server or the internet. If everyone's offline but the server itself seems fine, the problem may be your broadband or network, not the server. Try whether local shared files or apps work even with the internet down.
  5. Note any error, beep or lights. Photograph any on-screen error message, and note beep patterns or warning lights on the front of the server — these tell us a great deal before we even connect.
  6. Don't start reinstalling or 'repairing'. Please don't reinstall Windows, run recovery tools or reformat anything. Well-meant DIY at this stage is the most common way good data gets lost.
  7. Call us. Ring 01202 775566 and tell us what you found. We'll take it from there.

// HOW WE RESPOND

How we get your business back up — same day

When you call, here's what actually happens:

  • Rapid remote triage first. If the server or network is reachable at all, we connect with your permission using our remote tools to diagnose fast — no waiting for someone to drive over before anything happens.
  • On-site same-day if it's needed. If it's a power, hardware or physical fault, we come to you across Bournemouth, Poole, Christchurch and the wider Dorset area — hands-on, the same day wherever we can.
  • Diagnose properly. We work through power, hardware, RAID and disk health, and the operating system to find the real cause rather than papering over it.
  • Recover your data and restore from backup. The priority is your data. We recover what we can and restore from your backups to get you trading again.
  • Get you working, then make you resilient. Once you're back up, we advise honestly on what would stop this happening again — verified backups, a UPS, proactive monitoring, and whether ageing hardware is due for replacement.

An honest word on timing: we're a fast, same-day, remote-first local team working Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm — not a 24/7 hotline. What we promise is a real person who knows servers, moving quickly, the same day.

// AFTERWARDS

Stopping it happening again

A server that goes down once will usually do it again unless the underlying weakness is fixed. Once the fire's out, we help you build in the resilience that turns the next scare into a non-event:

  • Verified, tested backups — automatic and off-site, and actually checked, so a failed drive or ransomware doesn't end your week. See our disaster recovery page.
  • A UPS (battery backup) — so a power blip shuts the server down cleanly instead of crashing it and risking the RAID.
  • Proactive monitoring — we watch disk, RAID and server health so we often spot a failing drive before it takes the office offline.
  • Sensible replacement planning — if the hardware is past its best, we'll say so plainly and plan an upgrade on your timetable, not in a crisis.

Most of our clients move onto simple monthly support so this is all just handled. Take a look at our server and network support and managed IT support, or get in touch once the dust settles.

// GOOD QUESTIONS

Frequently asked

My server has crashed — what should I do right now?

Stop force-rebooting it repeatedly, as that can worsen disk or RAID damage. Quickly check the power and the network switch, photograph any error message and note any warning lights or beeps, and don't start reinstalling anything. Then call us on 01202 775566 and we'll take it from there.

How quickly can you help if our office is offline?

We aim to respond the same day. If the server or network is reachable, we start with rapid remote triage straight away rather than waiting for a site visit; if hands-on work is needed we come to you across Bournemouth, Poole, Christchurch and Dorset. We're a fast, same-day local team working Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm — not a 24/7 hotline.

Why shouldn't I just keep restarting the server?

One clean restart can be worth trying, but repeatedly cutting the power to a server — especially one with a RAID array or a struggling disk — can turn a recoverable fault into permanent data loss. If it didn't come back after the first restart, it's safer to stop and call us.

Can you recover our data if the server won't boot?

Very often, yes. A server that won't boot doesn't usually mean the data is gone — the fault is frequently power, hardware, RAID configuration or the operating system rather than the data itself. We diagnose the real cause, recover what we can and restore from your backups to get you working again.

Do you cover our area?

Yes — we're based in Bournemouth and cover Poole, Christchurch, Ferndown, Wimborne and the wider Dorset area, plus the New Forest and south-west Hampshire fringe. Most triage we can start remotely; for on-site work we come to you the same day wherever we can.

What will it cost to sort out an emergency server problem?

We quote clearly before any work begins, so there are no surprises. For ongoing peace of mind, our business IT support starts from £24.38 per month per computer on a rolling, cancel-anytime basis, which includes proactive monitoring and backups designed to help stop emergencies like this in the first place.
