How to share one internet connection between two buildings

/01 — THE SHORT ANSWER
The quickest way to share one connection across two buildings
To share one broadband connection between two buildings, you carry the signal from your main router into the second building using one of four methods—a buried Ethernet cable, powerline adapters, a mesh Wi-Fi system, or a point-to-point wireless bridge. For anything past a few metres, or where the two buildings sit on different electricity supplies, a wired Ethernet run or a wireless bridge is almost always the dependable answer.
Everything else is a trade-off between distance, whether you can dig a trench, and how much reliability you need. Here is the honest ladder, from cheapest and simplest to the option that copes with real distance:
- Short gap, easy to dig: run outdoor-grade Ethernet and add a Wi-Fi access point at the far end.
- Same electrical supply, short hop: powerline adapters may work—but often disappoint between buildings.
- Close outbuilding, thin walls: a mesh node can reach a garden room, but struggles across distance or thick stone.
- Distance, no trench, or line of sight across a gap: a point-to-point wireless bridge—our speciality.

/02 — OPTION 1: A WIRED RUN
A buried Ethernet cable: the gold standard
If you can get a cable between the buildings, a wired run is the gold standard—fastest, most stable, and immune to weather and interference. Use external-grade or direct-burial Ethernet cable (Cat5e or Cat6), ideally pulled through conduit so it is protected and replaceable, and route it at a sensible depth away from mains cables.
The one rule to remember: a single copper Ethernet run tops out at 100 metres (about 328 feet). Past that, speeds fall away and you start losing packets. If your buildings are further apart, you have two clean fixes—drop a small network switch in halfway to start a fresh 100-metre segment, or step up to fibre-optic cable, which happily runs far further.
Outdoors you also want surge protection at each end, because a long copper cable strung between two buildings can pick up electrical spikes in a storm. At the far end, plug the cable into a switch or a Wi-Fi access point—see our home network setup guide—and the second building has full-speed internet as if it were in the same room.
The catch is the digging. If a trench across a yard, driveway or field is impractical, that is exactly where a wireless bridge earns its keep.
/03 — OPTION 2: POWERLINE
Powerline adapters: simple, but often a let-down between buildings
Powerline (or ‘homeplug’) adapters send your network signal through the existing electrical wiring—plug one in near the router, another in the second building, and in theory the internet travels down the mains. When it works it’s wonderfully simple. Between two separate buildings, though, it often doesn’t.
The reason is electrical, not digital. Powerline needs a clean, continuous wiring path between the two adapters. If your outbuilding has its own consumer unit (fuse box), its own meter, or a separate supply from the road, the signal has to cross that boundary—and it usually can’t. Even a shared supply on different circuits can knock the speed down badly.
So powerline is worth a try only when the second building is fed from the same consumer unit as the house, on a short cable run—think an attached garage or a garden office wired off the main board. It’s cheap enough to test and return if it fails.

/04 — OPTION 3: MESH WI-FI
Mesh Wi-Fi: great last hop, poor way to cross the gap
A mesh Wi-Fi system uses several nodes that talk to each other to blanket an area in signal, and it’s brilliant inside a house. Push it outdoors between buildings and its limits show quickly. Wi-Fi weakens fast with distance, and the things between your buildings—cavity walls, stone, a metal shed roof, even wet foliage—soak up or bounce the signal away.
Metal and water are the worst offenders: a steel-clad workshop or a barn with a tin roof can act almost like a shield. A mesh node sitting in a window facing a nearby garden room might just reach, but you’ll often get a weak, dropping link that frustrates everyone who relies on it.
Where mesh does shine is after you’ve carried a solid connection into the second building by cable or bridge—then a node there gives you lovely Wi-Fi throughout that space. /05 — OPTION 4: WIRELESS BRIDGE
Point-to-point wireless bridge: our specialism
When there’s distance to cover and digging a trench isn’t practical, a point-to-point wireless bridge is usually the answer—and it’s our specialism. Two small weatherproof units are mounted outdoors, one on each building, and aimed directly at each other. Together they form a focused, high-speed radio link that behaves like an invisible Ethernet cable strung between the two roofs.
One unit connects to your main router with a short cable; the other feeds a switch or access point in the second building. They’re typically powered over the network cable (PoE), so you only need to run one lead to each. The single firm requirement is a clear line of sight—the two units need to ‘see’ each other, with trees, walls and outbuildings out of the path.
Off-the-shelf bridge kits comfortably cover distances up to around a kilometre, and with higher-gain directional antennas and clear line of sight you can go much further. UK radio rules cap the power these devices may transmit, which is one reason a proper install and correct aiming matters—done well, a bridge is fast, stable and barely noticeable. /06 — WHICH FITS YOUR SITE
Which option is right for your two buildings?
Choosing between the four comes down to three questions: how far apart are the buildings, can you dig, and are they on the same electricity supply?
- Under 100m and you can trench: a buried Ethernet run wins on speed and reliability every time.
- Attached or same fuse box, short hop: powerline is worth a cheap test, with a cable as backup.
- Very close, thin walls, light use: a mesh node may reach—fine for a bit of browsing, not for a busy office.
- Real distance, a trench you can’t or won’t dig, or clear line of sight across a gap: a point-to-point wireless bridge.
Real sites are rarely tidy, so we often combine them—a wireless bridge to cross a paddock, then a wired access point or mesh node inside the far building to spread the signal around. A workshop that needs card payments and stock lookups, a holiday let above a garage, a granny annexe, a barn office—each has a best answer, and it’s not always the most expensive one.

How do I get WiFi to a garden office or outbuilding?
In order of how well they actually work: an external-grade Ethernet cable in ducting to a small access point in the outbuilding (the gold standard, and cheaper than people expect); a point-to-point wireless bridge with genuine outdoor line of sight between the two buildings; and only then a mesh node — because the path from house to garden office usually crosses a masonry wall plus modern coated glazing, which together can swallow more signal than the rest of the house combined. Never point a bridge through a low-E window; the coating eats most of the signal before it starts.
What’s the best way to share one internet connection between two buildings?
For most UK properties it’s a straight choice between a buried Ethernet cable, if you can dig a trench under 100 metres, and a point-to-point wireless bridge, if you can’t dig or the buildings are further apart. Powerline and mesh Wi-Fi can work for short, easy hops but often disappoint between separate buildings. The right pick depends on distance, line of sight and your electrics.
How far apart can the two buildings be?

Will powerline adapters work between two buildings?
Only if the second building runs off the same consumer unit (fuse box) as the first, on a short wiring path. If your outbuilding has its own fuse box, its own meter, or a separate supply from the road, powerline almost always fails or crawls. It’s cheap to test, but don’t count on it across separate buildings—have a cable or bridge as plan B.
Do I need line of sight for a wireless bridge?
Yes—a clear line of sight between the two units is the one firm requirement. They need to ‘see’ each other with no buildings, dense trees or walls in the way, and mounting them high on a wall or pole usually solves it. If a tree or barn sits in the path, we’ll look at re-siting the units or a different route on the day.
Can a wireless bridge match a wired connection?
Honestly, a good wired run is still the fastest and most rock-solid option, and if you can dig a trench under 100 metres we’ll often recommend it. A well-installed bridge comes very close and is more than enough for internet, card machines, cameras and cloud apps—but heavy rain, a knocked antenna or a new obstruction can affect a radio link in ways a buried cable never will. We’ll always tell you the trade-off.

Not quite. Extending Wi-Fi tries to push your existing signal further, which fades fast through walls and across gardens. Sharing internet between buildings means carrying the connection itself—by cable or a focused wireless bridge—into the second building, then creating fresh, strong Wi-Fi there. That’s why the result is so much more reliable than a repeater in a window.
What if the second building has no broadband nearby at all?
If neither building has a usable line, we look at the connection first—sometimes Starlink or a fixed-wireless service into the main building, then a bridge or cable to the second.
