// GOOD QUESTIONS
Frequently asked
What is an SSL certificate?
It’s what puts the padlock in the browser and encrypts everything between your visitors and your website. Browsers loudly warn people away from sites without a valid one — so an expired certificate effectively takes your site offline.
What happens when a certificate expires?
Every visitor sees a full-screen security warning instead of your website, and most leave immediately. Email and online forms on the same domain can break too. Renewals should be automatic — but ‘should be’ is doing a lot of work, which is why it’s worth checking.
My certificate expires soon — what do I do?
If your hosting auto-renews (good hosting does), nothing — but confirm it rather than assume. If it doesn’t, renew via your hosting provider before the date shown. Or move to hosting we manage and never think about it again.
What does ‘not trusted’ or ‘self-signed’ mean?
The certificate wasn’t issued by an authority browsers recognise, so visitors get a warning even though encryption may technically work. It needs replacing with a proper certificate — free ones (Let’s Encrypt) are standard on decent hosting.
Is it safe to check my domain here?
Completely — we simply read the public certificate your website already shows every visitor. Nothing is stored.

// HOW IT WORKS
How to check when an SSL certificate expires
This free SSL certificate expiry checker reads the live certificate any website presents and tells you exactly when it expires, how many days remain, who issued it and whether browsers trust it.
| Result | What it means |
|---|---|
| Valid & trusted | Trusted issuer, correct domain, more than 21 days to renewal |
| Expiring soon | Still valid but 21 days or fewer remain — confirm auto-renewal now |
| Certificate expired | Lapsed — every visitor sees a security warning; fix today |
| Not yet valid | Start date is in the future — usually a server clock problem |
| Not trusted / self-signed | Issuer isn't recognised by browsers — visitors get a warning |
| Wrong certificate | Certificate doesn't cover this exact domain name |
Step by step
- Enter the domain — Type just the domain (for example yourbusiness.co.uk) into the checker — no https:// needed.
- Run the check — Click 'Check certificate'. The tool reads the certificate your site already shows every visitor on the secure port (443).
- Read the verdict — You'll get a plain-English verdict — valid, expiring soon, expired, not trusted or self-signed — at the top.
- Check the expiry date and days remaining — The results table shows the valid-from and valid-to dates plus the exact number of days left before renewal is due.
- Renew before it lapses — If it's expiring soon, confirm your hosting's auto-renewal is working — don't assume it — or renew manually before the date shown.
Good to know
How many days before expiry does the checker warn me?
If the certificate is valid but has 21 days or fewer left, the checker flags it amber as 'Expiring soon' with the exact day count, so you can confirm auto-renewal before it lapses rather than after.
Can I check any website's SSL expiry or just my own?
Any public website. The certificate is the same public one every visitor's browser reads, so checking a supplier's or competitor's expiry date is fine — nothing is stored.
What does 'Days remaining' mean if it's already expired?
If the certificate has already lapsed the tool shows how many days ago it expired and flags it red — that means visitors are seeing a full-screen security warning instead of your site, so it needs fixing today.
