What you need from your old provider (and what you don’t)
Most of a handover is about ownership, not goodwill. Your domain, your Microsoft 365 tenant, your backups and your data belong to you; the provider was only managing them on your behalf. So before you give notice, check you hold, or can get, these:
- Your domain name — the login for the registrar it was bought from, and confirmation it is registered in your business’s name, not theirs.
- Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace — a global administrator account in your own name. If the only admin is your provider’s, that is the first thing to fix.
- Backups — where they go, the login, and when a restore was last tested.
- Network kit — the admin password for your router, firewall and any Wi-Fi system, and whether the hardware is yours or leased.
- Licences and subscriptions — antivirus, Office, accounts software, website hosting, and which of them are billed through the provider rather than to you directly.
- Passwords they hold — a list of every account they set up for you. We change every one of them at handover.
Anything on that list you cannot get, we recover with you. In almost every case the accounts can be proved yours and reclaimed, even from a provider that has stopped answering.
What happens on the day
We take over quietly. Your email keeps flowing, your files stay where they are and nobody’s computer needs rebuilding. What changes is who you ring, who holds the admin passwords, and what gets checked every six weeks. We install our remote-support tool on each Windows PC, run the first full service, confirm the backup restores, and remove the old provider’s access and monitoring software so they are not still connected to your machines after the contract ends.
Notice periods and overlap
Check your current contract for a notice period: a month is common, and some tie you in for a year. We are happy to start before it ends so there is no gap in cover, and our own plans are rolling with no minimum term, so switching to us carries no lock-in of its own.
Worried it’ll be a hassle?
Most people put off switching because they fear disruption. In reality, we do the heavy lifting — transferring what’s needed, securing your accounts and making sure nothing is lost.
Provider gone bust or vanished?

// GOOD QUESTIONS
Frequently asked
Do I have to tell my current provider before talking to you?
No. A conversation with us commits you to nothing, and it is useful to know what you hold before you give notice.
Will we lose email or files during the switch?
No. Your email, files and Microsoft 365 stay exactly where they are; what moves is the management of them.
What if my old provider owns our domain or Microsoft 365?
It happens more than it should. Ownership can be transferred to you, and if they will not cooperate the accounts can usually be proved yours and recovered. Our page on a provider that has gone bust or vanished covers the steps.
Can you take over just one part, like Microsoft 365?
Yes. Some customers keep a hardware supplier or a web developer and move only their support and Microsoft 365 to us.
