Treat a pop-up as a scam — and do not act on it — if it:
- Tells you to call a phone number (Microsoft and Apple never do this)
- Shows a countdown, a siren sound, or “do not turn off your computer”
- Asks you to download software or grant remote access
- Demands payment by gift card, bank transfer or cryptocurrency
Signs of a genuine infection are usually quieter: a laptop that suddenly runs hot and slow, web searches redirecting to odd sites, new toolbars you never installed, files that won’t open, or friends saying they’ve had strange emails from you. Is the ‘your computer is infected’ message on my screen real?
Almost always, no. Genuine security software doesn’t fill your screen with sirens and a phone number — these pop-ups are scare adverts. Close the browser, don’t call, and if you can’t get rid of it, phone us on 01202 775566.
Should I call the phone number shown in a virus warning pop-up?
No. Microsoft, Apple and real antivirus firms never put a support number in a pop-up. Calling it connects you to a scammer who’ll try to take remote control and your money. Ignore it and call us instead.
Do you remove viruses from Android phones as well as laptops?
Yes. We clean malware and dodgy apps from Android phones and tablets as well as Windows PCs and laptops. We don’t currently support Apple Macs, iPhones or iPads.
How quickly can you remove a virus in Christchurch?
