// GOOD QUESTIONS
Frequently asked
Is the website checker really free?
Yes — completely free, with no sign-up. Pop in a web address and you’ll get an instant report on speed, SEO, accessibility, security and mobile-friendliness.
What does it actually check?
It runs Google’s own Lighthouse engine, scoring Performance, SEO, Accessibility and Best Practices out of 100, plus Core Web Vitals (real-world speed and stability) and quick checks like HTTPS, mobile viewport, page titles and meta descriptions.
Can I check any website or just my own?
Any public website — your own or a competitor’s. It’s a great way to see how you stack up.
What do the scores mean?
Each score is out of 100. Green (90+) is great, amber (50–89) has room to improve, and red (under 50) needs attention. The report lists the specific things to fix, in plain English.
My site scored badly — can you help?
Absolutely — that’s what we do. We’re a local Dorset web and IT team and we can sort speed, SEO, security and mobile issues for you. See our web design & hosting or just get in touch for a free fix-it plan.
Why did I get a ‘busy’ or error message?
The checker uses Google’s free testing service, which has a usage limit. If it’s busy, wait a minute and try again — or contact us and we’ll run a full audit for you. Errors usually mean the address was mistyped or the site isn’t publicly reachable.
Site not scoring well?
We’re a friendly local Dorset web & IT team — we’ll fix speed, SEO, security and mobile issues for you, with no jargon and no pressure.

// HOW IT WORKS
How to find out why your website is slow
A website is usually slow because of oversized images, render-blocking code, slow hosting or bloated scripts, and this free checker runs Google's Lighthouse engine to score your Performance and Core Web Vitals and list the exact things making it slow.
Step by step
- Enter your web address — Type your full website address (for example yourbusiness.co.uk) into the checker box.
- Pick Mobile or Desktop — Choose the device to test — Mobile is what most visitors and Google use, so start there.
- Run the check — Click 'Check website' and wait around 15 to 30 seconds while Google's Lighthouse engine analyses the page.
- Read your Performance score — Look at the Performance gauge (out of 100) and the Core Web Vitals — Largest Contentful Paint, INP and Cumulative Layout Shift show real-world speed and stability.
- Work through the top issues — Scroll to 'Top things to improve', where the report lists the specific speed problems in plain English, worst first.
Good to know
What is a good website speed score?
On this checker each Lighthouse score is out of 100: green (90+) is great, amber (50–89) has room to improve, and red (under 50) needs attention. For real-world speed, aim for a 'FAST' rating on Largest Contentful Paint and Interaction to Next Paint.
Does the checker tell me why my site is slow, not just that it is?
Yes — alongside the score it lists the actual culprits (such as unoptimised images, render-blocking scripts or slow server response) under 'Top things to improve', each with a plain-English explanation of what to fix.
Is a slow score caused by my hosting or my website?
It can be either. Core Web Vitals and server-response timings point to hosting, while large images, heavy plugins and unminified code point to the site itself. If you're not sure which, we're a Dorset web & IT team and can pin it down for you.
