What to Do Before Replacing Your Old Computer

Before you retire an old computer, a few steps protect your data and your privacy. Here is your pre-replacement checklist.

It is tempting to just unplug the old machine and move on — but a little care protects your files and your personal information.

Rescue your data

Back up everything, and make a note of the software and licences you will need again. Do not forget browser bookmarks, saved passwords and email — and check whether your photos are truly backed up.

Wipe before you let go

A simple delete or factory reset is not always enough. Securely wipe the drive so your personal and financial data cannot be recovered before you sell, donate or recycle the machine.

Key points

  • Back up all your files and photos first
  • Note the software and licences you will need
  • Securely wipe the drive — not just delete
  • Then sell, donate or recycle safely
