Windows updates fix security holes and bugs, so skipping them is risky. Just occasionally, though, an update clashes with hardware or software.
Why it happens
With endless combinations of PCs, drivers and software, Microsoft cannot test every setup. Now and then an update conflicts with an old driver or app, causing glitches.
How to stay safe
Do not turn updates off — instead, keep backups, install updates promptly but not always on day one for critical machines, and get help quickly if one causes problems. Most issues are easily rolled back.
