You typed something like "wifi heatmap online free no download" hoping a website could scan your house and paint a coloured map of where the signal is strong and weak. We'll be straight with you, because most pages ranking for this search aren't: no website can do that. A real heatmap plots radio signal strength — measured in dBm — at dozens of points on your floor plan, and web browsers are deliberately locked out of your WiFi radio. There is no browser feature that lets a page read signal strength, see nearby networks, or even know which access point you're connected to; it would be a privacy disaster if there were.

So any site promising a heatmap "online, no download" is either guessing from a speed test or drawing pretty pictures. But your search isn't a dead end. Below: what a genuine heatmap actually requires, the genuinely useful thing a browser can measure room by room — which for most homes is the better answer anyway — and our honest take on when to spend nothing at all, and when it's worth calling someone like us.

/02 — HOW REAL HEATMAPS WORK

A true heatmap needs installed software reading your WiFi card

A genuine WiFi heatmap works like this: you install an app on a laptop — NetSpot and Ekahau are the best-known names in this class — load or sketch your floor plan, then walk the building clicking your position as you go. The app reads the signal strength your WiFi adapter is actually receiving at each point, then fills in the gaps to produce those familiar red-to-green colour maps. The measurement is the whole product, and it can only come from software with direct access to the wireless hardware — exactly what a browser is forbidden from having.

Free options do exist, with caveats. Some heatmap apps offer a free tier for home use, though what's included changes over time, so check the current limits rather than taking an old article's word for it. On Android, free WiFi analyser apps can show live signal strength as you walk, which makes a rough-and-ready survey; Apple restricts this on iPhone, so an iPhone alone can't do the job. And if you just want one honest number with nothing new installed, Windows already has it: open a command prompt, type netsh wlan show interfaces, and look at the Signal line for your current connection.

What a browser can measure — often the more useful map

Here's the part most pages skip: signal strength was only ever a proxy for the thing you actually care about. Nobody's real question is "what dBm am I getting in the back bedroom?" It's "why do video calls break up in the back bedroom?" — and a browser can measure that directly. From a web page we can time how long data takes to travel (latency), how much that varies (jitter, the thing that wrecks calls), whether packets go missing, and how fast the connection really runs — separately, in every room you stand in.

Do that in each room and you've built a connection-quality map: not a coloured floor plan, but an honest picture of where your WiFi works and where it doesn't. Often it's more useful than a heatmap, because it catches problems signal strength misses — a room can show full bars and still stutter thanks to interference or congestion, which is common in UK brick and stone homes where the building itself shapes the signal.   • Speed falls off a cliff in certain rooms — distance and walls; classic signal decay. Router placement or a mesh node is the likely fix.
  • Speed is fine but jitter or packet loss is high — interference or a congested band; moving the router won't help much, changing channel or band might.
  • One device struggles where others are fine — suspect the device, not the WiFi.

Our honest advice, as people who fix this for a living: for a normal home, don't buy survey software, and think twice before spending an afternoon building a heatmap at all. Most domestic WiFi problems come down to a router in a terrible spot (cupboards and floor level are the usual suspects), one dead zone that a single mesh node cures, or old kit that was never going to cover a three-storey house.
