A clean power cut on its own rarely damages a modern computer’s hardware. The bigger risks are the voltage surge that can arrive when the power comes back on, and the machine losing power mid-task — which can corrupt open files or a half-finished Windows update.

In other words, the outage itself is usually the least of your worries. Millions of PCs sit through short cuts every winter and boot straight back up none the worse. What causes the occasional horror story is one of three things: a spike on restoration stressing the power supply, a write that was in progress when the lights went out, or a run of repeated dips — ‘brownouts’ — quietly wearing on the hardware.

So if you’ve just had a cut and your computer starts normally, you almost certainly have nothing to fix. Here are the three ways a power cut actually harms a computer, in rough order of how often we see them:

  • The surge when power returns. Electricity often comes back with a brief spike as the grid re-energises. That spike, not the outage, is what can damage a power supply or motherboard. It’s the single best reason to use proper surge protection.
  • An interrupted write. If the PC was saving a document, updating Windows or writing to a drive at the exact moment the power died, that file can be left half-written and corrupted.   • Repeated brownouts. Short dips and flickers, where the voltage sags rather than fully cutting, can be harder on a power supply than one clean outage, because the supply strains to hold voltage and a spike often follows as it recovers. A handful over the years is nothing; frequent ones on a shaky supply are worth guarding against.

Mechanical hard drives add one more wrinkle: their read/write head parks abruptly on power loss, and doing that hundreds of times can add wear. Solid-state drives (SSDs) have no moving parts and shrug off the shock, though an interrupted write can still corrupt the data being saved. Either way, a good backup matters far more than the drive type.

Laptops ride it out, desktops don’t

A laptop has a built-in defence a desktop doesn’t: its battery. When the mains cuts out, a healthy laptop simply switches to the battery and keeps running as if nothing happened — it’s effectively carrying its own miniature UPS everywhere it goes. You get time to save your work and shut down properly, and the surge-on-restore risk is far lower because the charger, not the delicate internals, takes the hit.

That protection depends on the battery still holding a charge. If yours is old and only lasts a few minutes unplugged — or you’ve removed it — the laptop behaves much like a desktop and can drop dead the instant the power goes. A tired battery is one of the most common reasons a laptop shuts off without warning.

A desktop PC has no such cushion. Pull its power and it stops instantly, mid-write and all. Surge protector vs UPS — the honest difference

Two very different products get muddled here, so let’s be clear:

  • A plain extension lead or four-way block does nothing. It splits one socket into several and offers no protection at all. If it doesn’t specifically say ‘surge protected’ with a joule rating, treat it as a bare socket.
  • A surge protector absorbs voltage spikes — including the one on restoration. It’s cheap, worth having on any desktop, and the higher the joule rating the more it can soak up. It does not keep your PC running through a cut.
  • A UPS (uninterruptible power supply) is a surge protector with a battery inside. When the mains fails it carries the PC for a few minutes — long enough to save everything and shut down cleanly, or ride out a brief flicker entirely. This is the only option that prevents interrupted-write corruption on a desktop.

For most homes, a decent surge protector is plenty. If you rely on a desktop for work, run a home office, or your area has regular cuts, a modest UPS is money well spent. Simple ways to protect your computer

You can’t stop a power cut, but a few habits make one a non-event:

  • Save often and let updates finish. Most corruption happens to whatever was being written at the instant of the cut. If a storm is forecast, don’t start a big Windows update, and shut the PC down properly rather than leaving it mid-task.
  • Back up regularly. The only thing that truly makes a power cut harmless is knowing your files are safe elsewhere. A cloud sync or an external backup turns even a corrupted drive into an inconvenience, not a disaster — see how to back up your photos.
  • Fit surge protection now, not after. The spike you’re guarding against arrives with the returning power, so the protection has to be in place beforehand to do its job.
  • For a bad storm, unplug. Nothing beats physically pulling the plug from the wall, which is worth doing for a nearby lightning risk. Switching off at the socket is the second-best option.

If your computer won’t turn on after a cut, work through the simple checks before assuming the worst — the cause is usually mundane:

  • Bypass everything. Plug the PC straight into a known-good wall socket, cutting out extension leads, surge strips and the UPS. A tripped strip or a knocked cable is the single most common culprit.
  • Reset the surge protector or UPS. Many have a breaker button that trips during an outage — press it back in, or try a different socket the cut may not have reached.
  • Drain the residual power. Unplug the machine, hold the power button for 20–30 seconds, then reconnect and try again. On a laptop, take the charger out too.
  • Look and listen. Any lights, fans or beeps at all point to a machine that’s alive but not booting — often a corrupted startup rather than dead hardware. Total silence more often means the power supply took the hit.
