⏳ Still on Windows 10 with ESU? Consumer Extended Security Updates end on 12 October 2027 — after that, no more security patches at all. If you haven’t enrolled, it’s free and takes minutes; either way, use the time to plan the move properly rather than in a rush next autumn.
// WHAT IT MEANS
What stops being safe
- No more security updates — newly-discovered holes won’t be patched, so attackers target them.
- Antivirus isn’t enough on its own — it can’t fix gaps in an unsupported operating system.
- Apps drop support — browsers, Microsoft 365 and other software gradually stop updating on Windows 10.
- Compliance & insurance risk — running unsupported systems can breach cyber-insurance and data-protection requirements.

Custom PCs →Windows 10 end of support, in plain English
On 14 October 2025, Microsoft ended free support for Windows 10. Your computer still turns on and works — but it no longer receives the free security updates that quietly protect you in the background. Over time, that makes an unsupported PC an easier target for scams, ransomware and viruses.
The good news: you have time to do this properly, and you don’t have to work it out alone. We’ll check your machines, tell you honestly what’s worth upgrading and what’s worth replacing, and handle the whole thing for you.
A quick glossary
- End of support — the date a product stops getting free updates and fixes.
- Security updates — free patches that close newly-found holes before criminals can use them.
- ESU (Extended Security Updates) — a way to get limited extra time on Windows 10 — free for home users who sync their settings to a Microsoft account.
- Windows 11 — the current, fully-supported version — a free upgrade on eligible PCs.

Is this PC still getting security updates?
Our free app’s This PC page says which Windows this PC has and until when it gets security updates. On Windows 10 it checks whether the PC is actually enrolled in Microsoft’s Extended Security Updates, from Windows Update’s own history, and it says whether the PC can probably move to Windows 11 for free.

// GOOD QUESTIONS
Frequently asked
What happens when Windows 10 ESU ends in October 2027?
Your PC keeps working — nothing switches off — but consumer security updates stop for good. Microsoft has already used its one extension, from October 2026 to 12 October 2027 (businesses can buy further years through volume licensing; consumers can’t). From that point every newly discovered Windows 10 flaw stays unpatched on your machine, which is a genuinely bad place for online banking and email to live. The sensible moves before then: upgrade to Windows 11 if your PC qualifies, or move to a machine that does — a refurbished business Dell is often the best-value route.
Is Windows 10 still safe to use?
Windows 10 reached end of support on 14 October 2025, so Microsoft no longer ships free security updates. It still switches on, but it gets steadily riskier the longer it goes unpatched.
Do I have to buy a new computer?
Not always. Many PCs can upgrade to Windows 11 for free — we’ll check whether yours is eligible, and only recommend a new machine if it genuinely makes sense.
What is ESU?
Extended Security Updates — a Microsoft programme that buys limited extra time on Windows 10 (you can even enrol free with a Microsoft account). We can advise whether it’s worth it, or set it up for you — see our Windows 10 ESU enrolment help if the ‘Enrol now’ button won’t appear. Businesses have a separate paid scheme — see what Windows 10 ESU costs a business.
Can you handle the whole upgrade for me?
Yes — our Windows 11 upgrade service in Poole & Bournemouth backs up your files, upgrades or sets up your PC, moves everything across and checks it all works. No stress and no lost data.
Will I lose my files if I upgrade to Windows 11?
Almost never — an in-place upgrade is designed to keep your files, apps and settings, though you should still back up first. Our honest guide will I lose my files upgrading to Windows 11? explains exactly what happens and the rare exceptions.
