Is it worth repairing a 5-year-old laptop?

The quickest test the trade uses: if the repair costs more than about half the price of a comparable new or refurbished laptop, lean towards replacing. Comfortably under that, and it’s usually worth fixing.
Age matters alongside cost. Under about five years old and a laptop is generally worth saving; well over five years with repeated or expensive faults points towards replacement. Sometimes the fix is tiny (and transforms the laptop)
Here’s the thing most people don’t realise: a laptop that’s simply slow is usually not worn out at all — it’s held back by an ageing hard drive or years of software clutter. A small, inexpensive upgrade often makes it feel brand new:
- An SSD upgrade is the single biggest speed boost for most older laptops — swapping a slow spinning hard drive for a solid-state drive can cut boot times from minutes to seconds.
- More memory (RAM) helps if it grinds to a halt with a few browser tabs or Office documents open.
- A fresh battery restores all-day portability without touching anything else.
- A proper clean-up and health check clears startup clutter, malware and dust that build up over years.

Can it still run Windows safely? The Windows 10 factor
One extra thing genuinely tips the balance in 2026: Windows 10 support ended on 14 October 2025. If your old laptop can still upgrade to Windows 11, a cheap fix or upgrade keeps it safe and going for years. If it can’t meet the Windows 11 requirements — broadly a TPM 2.0 security chip, Secure Boot and a newer processor (Intel 8th-gen or AMD Ryzen 2000 and up) — that’s a real nudge towards replacing.
You do have a stopgap: consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) provide critical security patches for Windows 10 22H2, and Microsoft has now extended the free consumer programme so cover runs to October 2027. You can enrol at no cost by turning on Windows Backup (settings sync) with a Microsoft account or by redeeming 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points, or pay a one-off £22 or so (a $30 fee) instead.
